THE WAIRARAPA DAILY. TUESDAY, OCTOBER 24,1882. AN OLD STORY.

Last week we reported the fact that a well-known identity, old Fitzsimnions, had been removed to ibe Hospital, the committee of that institution bavi'iy as a matter of benevolence waived their ordinary rules for the admittance of patients in his favor. His disease was found to be the old, old story, "drink" It appears that he has been in receipt fur some time past of one pound a week sick pay from the OdtJfeJlows' Lodge of this town, and apparently it was this sick pay that consigned poor Fitz with an sttack of raving delirium tn the Hospital. He was admitted on the 16th mat., and by Sunday the 22nd, the old mnn was cured of his complaint, but was informed he could remain in the building for a time till his friends could be communicated with. However, poor old Fitz. probably feeling tho old thirst come back upon him, tottered down into Mas'erton yesterday and turned into his old quarters, If his sick pay be continued it is extremely probable that in a week or so he will just as bad as ever. It is to be hoped that the Oddfellows will, if possible, guard against their money being thus misapplied. Fitzsimmons, it is said, has well-to-do friends nt Hokitika who could be compelled by law to provide for him. If such be the case it would bo a good thing if communication n-Bra opened up wjth them. The old man is past work, and it will be absurd to allow him to continue as a sort of; shuttlecock between tho Hospital and the! .Oddfellows Lodgo. The case is one that would justify the interference of the Benevolent Society should no satisfactory arrangement be made by the Oddfellows. It would have been better if Fitzsimmons had not been allowed to leave the Hospital till his fate bad in sbme way or other been determined. His departure was, we are informed, $ voluutary act on his own part, He had received an intimation from the medical ofljeerofthe establish-; ment that he was cured, but this was' coupled with permission to remain a little ; time longer. Apparently in the 8tal$ ;! Fitzsimmons was in, it was an error in judgment to permit him to decide such a question for himself as his natural inclination would undoubtedly he to mako fdr the nearest publichbuse.
