The jury brought in a verdict, " Guilty in the eye of the law," but with a strong recommendation to.meroy, as the first marriage had not been consummated, the first wife, a half-caste, having eloped twenty minutes after the ceremony. A sad accident happened ou the Mataura River last night, Two young men named John and William Smith were coming down in a boat when a squall struck and capsized her. John Smith managed to reach the shore hut William was drowned.
