Opaki to Manawatu roai—The maintea anee men on this road have beei. employed during the past month, principally in executing general repairs. ,On several sections the gravel forming the road 3urface is inferior in quality and laid on a soft bed, these sections, require cqnstantattention. A party of day men are Employed in renewing a bridge 74ft' long at Exetahuna and substituting a culvert and embankment, the works in connection therewith will be completed during the current month. Messrs Reese and Dawson are making good progress with their bridge contracts on thjsroaii, the 75ft span bridge-' will soon be completed: the piers are built, the trusses framed and partly erected, and. all the necessary materials for the completion of the works are delivered at the site. The works so far are executed in a very satisfactory manner.' About 4000 ft of'timberis .delivered near the site for the 60ft span bridge.,; , ', Officers of the survey department are at. work on the lands adjacent to the Opaki to Manawatu'road; lying between Mauriceville and Eketahuna and while they are engaged on this work . suitable reserves for road materials should be made, I would therefore suggest that the chief surveyor be asked, tq'ihavo the nccessary'reserves.laid off. The survey of the sites for the proposed new bridge over the. Kopuranga river at Mauriceville, and also for a new bridge over a creek near Mr Dorset's residence are made, and the plans &&, will be prepared forthwith.""" '"" '""■ Wangaehu Valley road.—Contract No, 2, The earthwork on this contract is nearly . completed. On, contract M 3 about twothirds of the earthwork is executed, and on contract No. 4 about one-half of the earthwork is done. Owing to the bad state of the. roadsjhe contractors have not been able to j;et materials delivered at the several contracts for culverts. Pahiatua roads.-Contract No. 4, Oii this contract about three-fourths' of the felling, clearing, grubbing, and earthwork is done. No work has yet been done on contracts 2 3 and 5. , Mauriceville South roads.-Contract No. 1 will be completed within two weeks from date. On contract No 2 about 22 chains of the earthwork is partly done, and 30 chains of the bush felled. Contract iNo, 3, On this contract all the bush is felled, and about 48 chains of the earthwork partly executed. ' On contract No. 4 which was completed about a month ago, a few small slips have occurred. These should be cleaned away as soon as possible, else the water in the side drains may injure the road bed. There are 11 chains formation and a bridge required to connect the Opaki to Manawatn road and the Mauriceville South road. This short length has been held over ponding arrangements with Mr Deans for a section of land in Dreyertown, over which the road pusses. These arrangements are so far completed that the works may now be proceeded with. I would therefore ask authority to proceed with thw construction, Hawere road,-Contract No, 1. .About 42 chains of felling, clearing, grubbing, and earthwork are about three-fourths completed the works so far are well exeouted, The small fridge on tho main road, Featherston wj he oompleted in six or eight days. '' Surveys.-Three and a. quarter mi.es of the Alfredton-Tiraumea road has been surveyed for construction. Two. miles of the road from the main road to, topship reserve at Mangaoreare being surveyed for construe tion.
