FLOODS AT NAPIER.
Napibb, June.B._ Heavy rains during the last few days . have caused the moat serious floods : experienced for years. The. whole country round about • Napier . under "wateri Residents' in the Olive ■and':Meahee"dis-" triets had to be removed in - boats.- All Ihe rivers are - overflowing their banks, suspending, vehicular traffic. and notice' is given. of: the ' suspension : of railway traffic; should rain continue, as the" embankment near tfaitangi'is being washed away.. The' County: - Council recently called the'attention of tlie Government to the danger of this embankment ..from; alteration in:the course ot the Ngaruroro. ■ Tlie schooners Frnnlc: Guy,. :Mary Wadley, and Silver Cloud, lying in the roadstead, liad to slip anchors and beat out, Tliey appear to have .well to sea. Heavy surf is now /breaking : on tho beach. There are; however,- sigi's of stoppage of rain, though the. wind keeps high, No loss of life is reported, and losses of stock are ..believed.to be .small, the settlers having anticipated .the' floods and driven their, animals to hiuher ground • ; .■

The Waipaoa- river overflowed in banlcs near Tutoko, inundating 'the country between tbore andjiweland. The efiects of the flood at Oimond havo been severe, Messrs Bloomfield, Wyllie, and Melville Smith succended in driving their stock to higher ground. Mr H. C. Boylan,, who rendered important assistance in saving life at the last flood proceeded with a boat to-day. accompanied by a few volunteers, to render assistance to out settlers in case of need. The Arai bridge has, according to latest information been washed away. This bridge \m erected about three years ago at the cost at £2500. The timely preoantions taken by the flettlers in sending their., itock away has prevented a much larger arhount of damage than would otherwise have occurred. The rain is still ffitiiout any indication of abating.

Mills to save the City of Perth, followed by misconception on the part of Capt, Macdonald as to Capt. Mills' reason for going' off caused by miscarriage of message sent That it further appeared tnat the immediate cause- of loss of-, life was the upsetting of' tlie third M through inefficient handling." Aclmreo had been made against the Board ' that' the life-boat had been allowed to' fall into an inefficient state. The Committee reported that that there was no foundation tor such charge.
