STREET WIDENING.
.To the Editor. Sir,—As street .widening har been brought before the notice of the public I think it deserves every ratepayer's special attention, We have a fair exhibition of the evils bf narrow Btreets brought before us. The evils are destructive fires, vehicles passing each other on dark nights endangering the lives of their occupants, and should fever or smallpox break out great would be-the distress. But again comes the question how is this work to he done, |lt has. been said the public should give their lands. This is wh'atthe'pebple will notdoj'Tlje Borough Council might as well'ask the wide ocean to give up its hidden treasures. I would suggest that a loan be; raised, and that all half chain /streets be made into threequarter or chain roads, as the case may be; but for the man that bought his seotion in' a chain street, and built Wr house thereon, is it right that an extra rate should be put on him, because I made my choice in a half chain street, 'and a loan has been raised to improve my property ? I say it would be unjust to do so j but would;lie-not be benefited .to a certain amount by these streetß being wider ) I think every one would; but to make myself blear on the subject, J think a special rate should; be. struck on -the owners of all properly in (those streets that had been bought and widened, suoh. a.'rate tha would pay.interest and: sinking fund and as the public would be benefited to some extent,! think the' Borough Council should give -some small amount yearly towards the reduction of .the- loan from general rates, arid where: most money waß spentj I .more rates-should he required, Hoping much abler ; hands 1 will' take, up the subject, and that it may be wel disoußßed, lam, etc, , Edwin Abno».
