Pakaruna Apurina was brought up on remand, chargod with burglary from the Mulijravo Hotel. Ole Christiansen, carpontor, deposed that lie kept a boarding house in Masterton. Tho prisoner carno to his house on 14th. He camo again on Hb£m|& On tlio followiui; Saturday and stopped' with him till tho following Wednesday, May 24th, when tho prisoner was arrested. On Monday the 22nd witness saw a revolver lying on tho table in the prisoner's bedroom, Tho revolver wns loaded. Ho thought tho one produced was tho ono ho then saw. Did not hear the accused say that he bought tho revolver. Did not know where the prisoner was botween the Thursday and tho Saturday. He paid witness oh Saturday for tho two meals which ho had on Thursday.' He received from his wife a sovereign which ho subsequently paid to Mrs Itenall. Cross-examined by prisoner : On another day prisoner carno in with another Maori. There were two or three Mamies in to dinnor on tho day in question, A man from Pahiatua named McLachlan went in to ill? bedroom .with witness. Did not know that prisoner left tho revolver on the table all day on Tuesday. Witness know that his wife received a sovoreign from tho accused on that day, but did not know that iho number on it was 1882. Did not hear the accused tell a man from Canterbury that he had bought the revolver. Re-examined by Sergeant Price: He told witness that ho had been to Wellington between the Thursday and Saturday. Mrs Christiansen dopused that slie remembered tliu prisoner cuining to their house on Thursday, May 18, beloro dinner. Ho had dinnor and tea there on that day, leaving between soven and eight. On Saturday he returned and paid lor tho two meals which bo bad on Thursday. He gave witness a sovereign which she believed was an English one. She gavo the accused eighteen shillings in change. He said he had bees down to Wellington to change a chequo. (Cross examined,) It was not oil Wednesday that the accused came to tho house. Almost 'every day Maoris came in to dinner, Sergeant Price deposed that he arrested tho prisoner on tho evening of tho 24th, who was in bed in 010 Christiansen's hoarding house. Ho cautioned the prisoner, and the latter stated that he bought a six chamber revolver with cartridges, from a man who had just come into town, on a bay horse, on Tuesday the 23rd, He described the man as tall with red whiskers. He addded that ho had sold the revolver again to a Lan at Kuniputii for thirty-fivo shillings, of which he received thirty-three, Ho said the revolver cost him fifty shillings. Ho sold it again on tho 24th. On soarclnng the bed in which prisoner lay, _ witness found tho revolver produced, it being under his pillow. Prisoner then stated that it was the other revolvor which he had sold and not that one, and that ho had had two in his possession. He also slated that he bad been living at the boarding houso since Saturday. Ho was at the boarding houso on the previous Thutsday, and that between Thursday and Saturday he had been to Wellington. Witness told him that ho could not have gone down on Thursday night, he said, I didn't go to Wellington; I went to the pah at To Ore Ore." On further searching the prisoner, witness found in his vest pocket seven revolver cartridges, making thirteen with tho six in tho revolver, He also stilted that a boy saw him buy the revolver from a man outside of the Prince of Wales Hotel, but did not think he would know the boy again, This concluded tho caso for the prosecution. Prisoner stated that on Thursday morning he went to Wellington. Before going he bought some cake tobacco, A. baker asked him his name, who then said, "I know you; you havo just como out of gaol," and gave him the tobacco. Prisoner gave a £1 note and received change. Ho then went to Wellington by train. Arrived in Wellington after dinner and presented a cheque to a storekeeper, hut did nut know his namo, and received change for it, £2 10s On Friday morning ho returned to tho Lower Hult. Stopped there and liuii dinnor at the hotel. At 3 o'elotl ft nt to the railway station and asked lie station master how much the tickets were to Mastorton, and he said 10s Gd. He then came along by train and arrived in Masterton on Friday night, and at 10 o'clock went to Te Ore Ore. On the next morning at 8 o'clock he came into Mastorton. He saw a European .wl asked him for his hat, and the man «.id lie would not givo it to hira. Ho went to Caselberg's store and bought a pair of trousers. Ho then went to Christiansen's accommodation houso, and his wife saw him. She said to him, " I thought you had gone away." He gavo hor a sovereign and received 18s change. He remained there. On Tuesday morning some Europeans camo tliero and asked him if ho wanted to buy any firearms. Ho paid the man 30s for one of the revolvers, and ho then went away. Tho prisoner was then coinmittod to take his trial at tho next Bitting of the Supreme Court.
