THE LATE FIRE.

The recent fire in Masterton should suggest, to the ratepayers in general and t the Borough Councillors in particular, the imminent danger from streets half a chain in width in the heart of the town. It would, in our opinion, be wise to borrow money for the purpose of widening Bannister-street, The event also points to the necessity of increasing the efficiency of the Fire Brigade by liberal public and private subsidies. Thanks to the practice and discipline of its members the brigade did its work splendidly on this occasion, anil undoubtedly saved a vast amount of property from destruction, but had there been a breeze it would, without better appliances and a stronger staff, have been unable to avert the spread of the conflagration.

Three Insurance agents came up to Masterton from the City of Wellington last evening in connection with the late fire. We believe that it is their intention as»matter of custom to hold an inquest though practically there is nothing for them to do but to pay all claims and look pleasant.

An important resolution was passed at the lust meeting of the Masterton Good Templar Lodge. On the recoomendatiou of a special committee it was decided to request tho Ministers of this town to preach a Temperance Sermon upon some Sunday to be agreed upon. As, with a wise caution, the subject attested is broadly that of Temperance we think no unwillingness will be manifested to comply with this petition, and it seems to us a steo in the right direction. Tho Masterton School Cadets have improved very rapidly, and called forth the high eneomuims of Cantain I'ully yesterday. They, however, are suffering under a great disadvantage—they have no uniforms, and the Governmentwill not supply the cloth to make them without the cash or until the capitation money shall have paid for it. This will not be till next March. We might suggest that this case is a proper one for the aid of tho Master-

ton Amateur Dramatic Club, At Greytown the Cadets were greatly assisted by an entertainment, and the Club could give even mow'substantial assistance, as their efforts are always so heartily appreciated by the public. A meeting of the Masterton Fire Brigade Committee was hold yesterday afternoon. . Present-Messrs Payton (chairman), Muir, Oaselberg, Sellar, and'Bish. Captain Muir ivas authorised to pay for the pumping done at the late fire, An application was received from the Brigade for light ladders, grappling irons, and chains, and it was decided that the captain and secretary should interview the insurance agents with a view to-secure them from this source. It was also arranged that a3 the Brigade is urgently in need of funds for now uniforms and other purposes, that the Borough Council should be applied to for its annual grant which it was hoped would be on this occasion a liberal one.

In directing oar readers' notice to B. A. Gabdeneb * Son's new advertisement on our front page, we wish them to notice tho extraordinary way a business can be made to co ahead, when properly managed. Two years ago this firm started their business in Carterton, neither knowing or boing known hy anyone. Their destiny was forshadowed by not a few (especially storekeepers, two of whom have since resigned). There being no fewer that eleven Stores in Carterton at that time their chances of success were not any too good, nevertheless we have to record that this firm have imported direct from Home during that short period goods to tho amount of £25,000, and all paid for, Where is it all gone, wo ask ? The answer is simply-Sold 1 This firm has never been afraid to trade in their own name, hence. their success.—[Advt,]
