THE CHAMPION SCULLING RACE,
London, May 1, The sculling race between Edward Hanlan, of Toronto,- the ohampior." of ■ the' world, and Edward Trickett, of Sydney, for £SOO a side, took place tb-day r over the usual course on the Thames," suited in a victory for Hanlan by four lengths.
Later, Hanlan'B victory over Trickett was the easiest that can be imagined. He stopped three times during the race, and literally " played" with Trickett. The weather was very fine, the sun shining brightly, and the water waß perfectly smooth. Large orowds of people witnessed the contest from the banks of the river all along the course. ,
In the House of Commonß to-day, the ; '''' cloture proposals of Mr Gladstone were ' 'again under consideration. In the course ; of the sitting an amendment wasproposed that a Minister, and not the Speaker, should have power to initiate the adoption of the cloture. After a protracted debate i the amendment was rejected <Sn division by a majority of 46.
