WOODVILLE.

From our own Correspondent. Since.my last letter things havo been very quiet if we except a Blight row over our Doctor. The committee Inuring so many complaints .and so much general dissatisfaction expressed by subscribers, decided to give him three month's notice of termination of our agreement, The Odd Fellows dismissed him two months since. The Good Templars appear to wish to keep him, and he (the Doctor) takes hjs notice unkindly and threatens to sue the committee for wrongful dismissal, but I don't think he is suob a fool as lo carry out his threat. Mr Alexander Peebles, carrier, had a wonderful escape last Saturday. He was returning from Palmerston with a load of long timber, and having a young horse in the shafts that was rather hard in the mouth he'pulled.him short round at-a corner when the timber struck the horse's head and. he made a bound off, and in a moment the driver, dray, and three horses were rolling down the gorge, How all escaped instantaneous death is a miracle, hut, strange, to say all escaped with a few .bruises and a little harness broke, but nothing more, The new school mistress, Miss F. McPhee of Wellington is expected at the beginning of May when. I hope, our school here will progress a little more satisfactorily. The presentaverage attendance isabout 90.

Mesara Monteith and Fountain?; have got into their new store at last,- and though beiner over ejghtean months in building, it is finished in really &rst : claas style and would be a credit.to any; town, or eyen city in New Zealand. Messrs Troupe and Pattinson have purchased the, butchering, business of Messrs Monteith, and taken' the old store, whioh they intend Ming up : into a first-class butcher's shop. The Catholics of Woodville must be congratulated; Mr Sydney Johnson presented them with an acre of land and subscriptions were opened on Saturday last and by Tuesday over £SO had been collected and the order given for the timber. I haven't seen the design yet, so cannot give any idea of what sort of buildihey intend to erect, but judging from the energy displayed at the start, I shall predict a church that will be a credit to the district.

The Free Methodist church is hanging fire somewhat. Tenders have been called but were delayed a month through Borne hitch in the money not being forthcoming.

Mr Norman Campbell started his saw mill this day. I hear he has orders sufficient to keep the mill going for three mouths- I wish him success in his venture.

Applications for a new Hotel has been sent into the Licensing Commissioners, but nothing is settled yet. Carpenters should have a busy time of it this winter, judging from the number of new buildings to be erected, viz., two churches, Hotel, saddler's shop, cabinetmaker's shop, blacksmith's shop, and several dwelling houses. _ The Woodvifle Brass Band of twelve instruments are steadily practising under the leadership of Mr G. A. King, and will mako their first appearance on the Queen's Birthday,
