Mr E, Bezar, into poundkeeper and ranger, applied for arrears alleged to be due to him to the extent of 1718s.

Thp Qlepk, stated that Mr Begai' was indebted to the Council some £lO for rent. .Or Casolberg moved—That the matter be referred to the Clerk to make but a correct statement of the account. If he found money was due' to Mr Bezar it should be paid, Seconded by Cr Price and carrjed. . IWJ% PUJ!? FOOTPATH, A petition was presented, signed by several settlers of the Upper' Plain praying that the footpath from' Chappbst. to Mrs Yates' corner bo constructed as soon as possible, and setting forth that' it was on the iintlei-Blanding tjjat thi§ work wag to bo dono immediately that they had given the land for the same purpose along their frontages, The Mayor said ho did not think any such prqmise could have been niadp, as (lie Council had pot acquired the land fromChapel;street Iq thp'pojnt namep 1 , and until they did so they could not dp the work.

Or Gapper said Mr Ronall had given (he Council leavp to take the ground, but it was than found thatthpy could not take ft without thp consent of Mr Renall's leaseholders. Or Chamberlain thought the peliljpprs had a good claim to have the work done, They l|ad paid a great deal of rates and had never complained as tp where they were expended. There was alsp as rnuph (raflii: on the road as on any in the Burovigh, and it was altogether tpo narrow. It was not safe for either foot passengers or vehicles on a dark night, Ho sjrqngly adyopatei} the work bping done as fiooiras the pouncjl was in funds, The clerk turned up the Jetter tp the ratepayers along the road, which asked them to give thp land, and he pointed out that the promise made jn that was to construct a footpath from Mr§ Yates' corper to the of thp Bprougli and upt from Chapel street to Mrs Yates'. Cr dapper sp] Cr phamherljiin seemed to think no money had been expended on this.ppytion pf the Bprpugb, but he would point out that a great deal had been done and that in a few week's time ovpr 1J35 would have been spent pn this road, Cr Chamberlain said he was sure some promise must have been given to the people to induce (horn to givo their land. The Mayor said it had always been the intention of tho Council to widen the road right through, but no promise could have been given that the lower portion would be done at once as the Council had not yet acquired tho land. Or Gapper stated part of thp work had already been done and the whole was on the schedule of the Works Committee.

Cr Oaselberg moved that the Council take steps to acquire the ten feet of land from Chapol-sfc to the boundary of the Borough at once. Cr Feist seconded the motion which was put apd carried. Cf Chamberlain thpiiffhl a Committee should be appointed''to' wait upon the variom settlers His Worship said it would be sufficient if left in the hands of the Clerk, DEPUTATION. A deputation consisting of Messrs T. and Q, Chamberlain, and J. Hessey waited upon the Council witl) regard to the matter just discussed. ■ MrT. Chamberlain said they came to the Council with a good claim, they paid their rates and required a footpath as badly as many streets in the Borough which had two. The residents were quite willing t" contribute fairly to the work.

The Mayor explained to the doputution that the Council could not construct the path till it acquired the land, and explained the resolution which had just been passed. Mr 6. Chamberlain said he had understood Mr Eenall had given his land, and that was why he gave his; and he had expected to see Mr Renall's fence shifted before the others, Mr Hessy held that the Council had broken faith with the ratepayers in the matter, as the path was promised if the land was given, Or Caselberg explainad that that promise only referred to the upper portion and not to the piece that was now being petitioned for.' Cr Feist stated that, after listening to what had fallen from the various speakers, he had come to the conclusion that the people had given their land on the understanding that Mr Eenall had given bis. They had been asked immediately after Mr Eenall had consented, and before it was found that his tenants had also to give their sanction. There could be no doubt that the Council intended to do the work.

The Mayor informed the deputation that their petition had been met. by the resolution passed, and it then thanked the Gounoil'and withdrew. : WORKS COMMITTEE.
