IRISH LANDLORDS.
Archdeacon Crawford, of Castlemaine, Viotoria, has, unexpectedly, attained to to the honor of being referred to as a representative Irish landlord, by Mr Chamberlain, M.P., in a speech delivered in Birmingham, upon the subject of compensation to Irish landlords'' Here is what Mr Chamberlain said of the rev gentleman" The first case was the case of ArchdeaconCrawford who had been away from Ireland for SO years. In his absence the agent raised the rents in 1868, The whole of the improvements have been made by the tenants (groans); tho landlord has not spent .one .single ..penny on his property for 24 years; and under these circumstances tho Sub-Commission decided that the rents ought to IjAf itlucecl on an average by 26 per I want to know who is going these tenants, who for 15 yeSwrleast have been paying 26 per cent is now declared to lie fair rent ? (Cheers)" Whon the Church finds in such a man a fitting object to confer her favors upon, it can hardly be wondered at that laymen look upon religion as a vesture to be worn on Suuduys, and put aside on Mondays; nor is it surprising that there are in the world so many hands strotched out to grasp and so few to give.
