A VOICE FROM THE SUBURBS.

To tie Editor Sir,—At the last Borough Counoil.meet' . in?, some of the Councillors said that after all the strests were done in the oentre - of the town, the outskirts would; receive "> attention. Ofoourse'thatis human nature -self first, but what guarantee hare we got;, that this plan will be carried out. Per* , haps when the time cornea for our roads - (

to receive their share of tho rates, a, majority of the Councillors will put their heads together and decide that an expensive drainage system Is necessary to carry off the dirt from around their places'of business and private residences, or perhaps some Queen Street shop keeper may think to himself that the dust is spoiling tho look of some latest imported European novelty, or another, that the dust makes, his best fresh beef or mutton looks stale and so on. (I do not mean to insinuate that the Mayor has any dislike for the dust, because the more dust there is about the more watohes there is likely to be to clean.) The outcome of these soliloquies would baa water system lor Masterton, so that each storekeeper could have a. small boy with a hose and nicely lay the dust, within a certain radius of their respective stores. We .have no : power to prevent a programme similar to the above from being carried out, and, if something similar should be done in the future, I suppose we should juat have to grin and bear it. lam, &c.'
