A SAD CASE. A MOTHER STRANGLE'S HER INFANT. - Patea, Ihis day, Mary O'Snllivan, a widow whose husband was killed by a vehicle accident hero 18 months ago was arrested last evening for infanticide. The body of a female child over a week old was found wrapped iu an old towel under her house by some children. On their alarm she removed it telling them it was a little jpig, and when the police arrived slio was in the act of carrying it away in a kit. A string was found tied tightly round the neck and she remarked on being removed to the station that she ppposed she would get two or three years. In the evening she appeared to fully realise liar position, ai)d her grief is so great that she is now in a very low state. An inquest will bo held this afternoon. Mrs O'Sullivan, who is only about 27, wbb considered a highly respectable woman before the death of her husband, by whom she has four children, but since then has led a loose life. THE FIRE KING. Wanganui, this day. Major Nixon's house at Seabrook, Wanganui, was totally destroyed by firo this morning, The fire originated near the kitchen chimney, and no water being available it spread rapidly. The Fire Brigade came from town, but too late to save the building. Major Nixon is an invalid, and fears of his safety were entertained in town, but fortunately the weather beino fine he had gone out into the garden. A portion of the furniture was saved, but the library containing many valuable books and Maori curios was lost. The Houso was insured in the Liverpool, London and Globe for iIOOO, furniture uninsured.
