Messrs Lewes and lows announce an extensive salo of new and fecond-hand furniture and effects on Saturday next. The partnership hitherto existiug between Messrs Harvey and Murray as wool scourers, tanuers, &c., has been dissolved by mutual consent, Notice is given of the intention of tho Mnsterton Borough Council to strike a geneml rate of Is in the pound and a Library rate of Id in tho pound. The Foresters' of Court Loyal Enterprise aro summoned to meet to-morrow evening at their Court room. Tenders are invited by the Borough up to Monday 3rd April for about 20 chains formation and metalling in Short Street, and 12 chains in Railway raod.

The usual weekly praotico of tho Carterton Fjro Brigade took place last night, tho engine and hose being thoroughly ovor hauled, washed, and packed in good working order. Owing to tho Waiiurapa Daily being now posto.l into the ordinary post box in tho evening instead of being handed through the delivery window in the afternoon as heretofore, Mr Bagge informs us that tho receptacle for newspapers is totally inadequate to contain the number wo post, and that ho has received permission to have a new box made doifblo the size of the present one.

The farpwoll tea meptfi|g to tlje Revs, Duke's find 'Thomas' took" plaep at tho Wosleyau Chapel, Carterton, on Tuesday, and was very largely attended. During the ovoning several selections were very nicely sang by tho choir and friends from Greytown. 'i'he speakers of the evening were Messrs Rush, Thomas, Dukes, Cmidy, senr., and Setli Hart, A collection was made at the close of the meeting which amounted to £B.

A lull attendance of the vestay of St, Mark's Church, Carterton, took place in the Sunday school on Monday evening, the Rev. W. T. Western presiding, The minutes of tho last meeting were read and confirmed, and an account of M insurance on the chinch passed for payment. The plans for the parsonage were then fully discussed, and ultimately it was decided to push on with it and the enlargement of the church at once, arrangements being made for the removal of the schoolroom to-day, tho work to be supervised by Mr L,■ Wilson, the churchwarden. The meetup about ten o'clock.

■ Ttfere are at present at the Parkvale Schdni on tho Taratahi 35 children, and Mrs Powloy, who has for some time past had charge of tho school but who loaves for England in a few days, at the recent examination hold on tho 16th inst. concluded her services at tho school by presenting 22 children and passing all creditably without a single failure, while the roll-hook shows the utmost regularity in the attendance of the children, and we trust to see Mrs Hanson as successful in the conduct ot the school as her predecessor has been. On Friday a treat was given to the children by the committee and some of their frionds in Mr R, Fairbrother's paddock, and all seemed to thoroughly enjoy themselves, Racing, jumping, and other sports took place for prizes, while tho usual round of games at such meetings were indulged in, At 4.30 the children were marched up to the schoolhouse where a substantial tea had been provided which was dono full justice to by the youngsters. Prizes were then distributed to the successful scholars to the value of £l2, and also the following three extra One by Mr L. Nix for the best attendance; one by Mr Miller for the greatest number of marks at the examination, Jane Eaton; and one by Mrs Powley, a doll most tastefully arrayed to the little girl who obtained the greatest number of marks during the year, Ada Osborn. The committee have also presented Mrs Powloy with an address and a handsome volume as a mark of their regard for the good service she has done in the district. Tho following is tho result of the passes at the examination4th Standard—Jane Baton,' G: H. Eaton. 3rd Standard—Thos'. Eaton, John Goodin, ,Mary Anii Oliver. 2nd Standard—Arthur Oliver, Thos. Oliver, Charles Oliver, Wm, Miller, Charles Eaton, Eliza Oliver, Eliza Goodin, Elizabeth-vVilliscroft, Ist Stan-dard-Alfred Williscroft, Charles Martin, Emma Williscroft, Ellen Oliver, Maria Christiansen, Ellen Eaton, Ada Osborne, Emma Goodin, Emma Coe. The Maßterton Borough Council, on the motion of the Mayor, last night instated the Clerk to communicate with the authorities with a view to abtaining a third constable for Masterton. We belie ie this is very necessary, as Boraetimes (as was the case yesterday) one of the present officers may be away with a prisoner, the other engaged fin some statistical work or other, as is usually the case, and if a prisoner is brought in he has either to bo discharges or the constable has to negleot the duty be is engaged upon in order to attend to him. His' Worship yesterday reprimanded and discharged a man who might, but for these circumstances, have been given a few, hours fn the lock-up. The Masterton police are iiearly;always engaged ill clerical work, and can hardly b'e'expeoted to be able to attend to that and police duties at the same time,

We are glad to see that some check is to be placed upon furious riders and drivers* Occasionally of late it has not been safe to walk upon the road after dusk and the rule of driving round corners at a walk is ignored. The usual weekly drill of the Greytown Volunteers was held last evening. Captain Tally and Lieutenant Cameron in command. The Lieutenant drilled the men for an hour and a half, including a good spell at bayonet exercise. The newly elooted Sub-Lieutenant returned thanks for the honor conferred on him, and hoped that a good feeling would always exist between the corps and himself.
