A meeting of tho Committee of tho Masterton Football Club was held at Mr Bunny's office on Saturday evening. The affairs of the Ohb were gone into, when it w&b found that after paying all accounts (including some for the year 1880),tnere waß a Binall balance in hand. Mr C. Morrison was appointed Secretary in place of Mr A. W. Harrison who hnß left 'Masterton, It was decided to hold the general meeting of the club on Saturday 25th March.
The second competition for Lieutenant Cameron's cup, by the Greytown Rifle Volunteers; took place.on Saturday last; the flvo higheßt;scores being mado by the morning squad, who had a decided advantage over the afternoon squad, the morning being calm and the afternoon windy. The system adapted of shewing each marksman where his shots hit, have cawed a decided improvement in the shooting. There has been an outcry against registration dog collars, but somo intelligent settlers have found that the larger sizes make cheap and efficient hatno straps. The demand for largo sized dog collars is increasing, and the murmurs about compulsory collars are diminishing Mr J, W. Lang of the Toll gate met with a nasty accident to day. He was passing out of his housedoor when he trod on a cat, and rolling over fractured both hones of one of his legs, a little above the instep. DrHoskinghas set the injured limb and with a little patience wo hope in due time we hope to see Mr Laig walking about again. The Foresters of Tenui, and district' are about to enjoy a reunion by means a day's sports, and a ball on tho 17th inst. Court Pioneer is evidently vigorous and enterprising, and as thoro are a goodly number of members of the order, and their friends in Tenui and Whareama districts who will he glad of the opportunity of meeting each other and spending a pleasant day together, and perhaps of once again tripping it on the "light fautastic toe" in the evening, a thoroughly successful and enjoyable gathering should result.
We understand that Dr Lemon proposes to connect outlying districts with the telegraphic lines of the colony by means of telephones. Last week he paid a visit to the Wairarapa and decided to connect tho Gladstone and Carterton Post Offices with a telephonic wire. As an instance of private enterprise, we may mention that Mr W. Booth of Carterton is connecting his office with hia residence by a telephone. A cricket match, Greytown v Kurituwhiti, was played in Steward's paddock on Saturday afternoon, and resulted in another win for the latter olnb by one run, the scores beintt 62 and 61. For the winning side H. TJdy made 22 not out, and Ronaldson, for the losers, made 20, being run out, both batsmen showed very fjond form; none of the others reached double figures. Tho play on both aides was pretty good; the most improvement noticeable was in the fielding. Next Saturday, Greytown plays a match with tho Mastorton olub, and the following Tuesday they play the Taita club. Members are requested te roll up to practioe to-morrow and Thursday afternoon at 4 o'clock. ..-.- ----- --
