On Saturday, the Wairarapn West County had to choose between neglect" ing the main line and a county rate. It decided to neglect the main lino. Next spring it may have a Government subsidy to enable it to repair the road, but if it has, tho Government will hava to divert money from outlying districts, to spend it. in centres of population. If there is no windfall forthcoming in the shape of a subsidy, the dangerous stato of the main line will reconcile public opinion to a county rate. We quite sympathise with the objection which is now felt by settlers against a multiplicity of taxes, and it is right that no new one should be allowed to swell the list without its necessity being demonstrated conclusively. We believo that a county rate will be found to be expedient, unless the Highway Boards consent to job the Counties in levying a common rate, but we are also of opinion that the Property Tax should, after the current year, be abandoned. If this were done settlers would no doubt cheerfully accept a county rate, and the unsatisfactory debtor and creditor account now current between the Go--vernment and local bodies might be closed, -I
