MASTERTON DEBATING SOCIETY.
Thb Society discussed last evening:—"la smoking injurious." Mr Hall led in the affirmative, maintaining that smoking was most injurious as it tended to weaken the mind, created a desire for drink, and brought on immorality. He quoted from Dr Biohardsou to show thai smoking was the forerunner of many diseases and greatly impairid digestion. He alto quoted an instance of a school of 160 ttuhulji'B, 102 of whom were smokers, but of tho 102 smokers only six took prizes, while of the remaining 58 non-smokers 14 took prizes. He said it was simply a habit contracted from others, and pointed out the difference between nations which did Bmoke and nations which did not. Mr Redman followed in the negative, also quoting from Dr Bichardson to shew that smoking was beneficial, and shewed that his suppositions only applied to ~ immoderate amokerß. He pointed out that the consumption mentioned by Mr Hall was the result of climate and not o{ Bmoking. After Messrs Woodroofe and D'Aroy had spoken against and Messrs Parkei, Bay, and Hogg for, a vote wbb taken, six voting for and live against.
