CO-OPERATION.

At the drillshed, Mosgiel, on Wednesday evening, Mr William Bateman, of Christchurch, lectured on co-operative farming, under the auspices of the Taieri Agricultural Society. There were about 50 persons present, and Mr John Andrew, president of the Society, occupied the chair. Mr Bateman reviewed the general principles of co-operation, and referred to the Timaru Co-operative Society, which had been established as the result of his lectures in the district by the independent gentlemen who combined for tho purpose of sending grain to England, and their action had been a successful one. Business, he said, was now carried on on commercial principles, but by substituting cooperation, capital would be made the slave instead of labor. He advised the farmers to co-ooerate in disposing of their grain and dairy produce, as well as lor supply of stores and implements, and for transaction of banking business, so that they might derive the full benefit of their labor, instead of allowing agents and shipping and other companies, as aji present, to absorb so much of 'its value, In his opinion the' meat-freossing process would never prove a success unless the booperative principle were applied tu it, Mr Batoraan's address occupied nearly twohours iu delivery, and was received with much applause. The meeting terminated in the usual monner, (Otago witness).
