■ If the first result of Major Bunny's appointment to the command of this district is the removal of Sergeant Major Bezar to Featherstqn to must lodge a protest. We do not desire to question the expediency of the new arrangements the Government have made in this district for the conduct of its. Volunteer business, though they are, as everybody knows, open to adverse critioism If however they are to be, followed by absurd changes nuchas the one which is cow contemplated it is to he hoped that 6ome friend of the Government will jog their olbow and remind them that blunders are being" perpetrated which will bring their administration into contempt and ridicule. To place the drill.instructnr of the district in the only township in which there is no corps is such an absurdity that even for the. sake of Mr Bunny we cannot consent to such a preposterous afcuse of newly-fledged authority. We presume the old Waiohine Bridge will he kept inker till after tho Wairarapa Hacea. Wood & Cn. are instructed to sell on Saturday next at their auction rooms the piivilegesof the Wairarapa Jockey Club's annual meeting. The number of entries of horses for this meeting will ensure a very large concourse of people at them, and.we.anticipate a keen competition fur all the privileges. Those interested in horses will regret to hear that Mr Ray's two year old filly Lur'bine by Mangle—Taratahi, died on Sotur- % last from internal inflammation.

We need hardly remind country settlers'of the Ram and Ewe Fair'at Carterton to-morrow, as the atrcng interest taken in it throughout all narts .-of/the district, as testified by innumerable entries, will make the gathering 'ou "tk'iV occasion a very large one. Mr John M'Lennan of Feathercton has proceeded to Eketaunna to take charge of the Hotel there which he has purchased from Mr M. McKonzie. From all we hear he will be the right man m tho right place, and will prove a popular host among the travelling public. We have received a letter from Mr B. Hare, in which he accuses us ot knowingly misleading the public., Our columns have always bceu open to Mr Hare, and lie has been wont to make a very free use of them but they are closed to him till he retracts the charge of wilful misrepresentation which he has thought proper to bring: against us.

We understand that Messrs Beetliam Bra?, not only contemplate the establishment of meat preserving works near the Waingawa, but also the construction of a narrow gauge railway line from the Tauera to Masterton with a view of bringing ,to market the tokra which grows on some three thousand acres of their estate in that neighborhood. This is good news for Masterton as it means the employment of a very large amount of capital in home labor.
On Saturday the 11th inst., Mr Thompson of the Taueru Hotel kindly gave a middle aged man mimed Ellis a lift into Masterton to'look for work. The man being unsuccessful in his quest returned to Taueru in the same brake, stopped at the Hotel all night, and left after breakfast Hie following morning to go to Brance peth. Since then nothing has been heard ot him, and as it was rumored that ho was subject to fits, search parties from the station, assisted by the Police have limited in vain for a (race of bim. It is supposed tha' he must have gone through to the Whartama, and an inquiry will he mado throuali the Police in that district

The sale of the whole of the properties in" the estate of W, Miller, Esq., to be held on Wednesday, at 2 o'olo'ok, by Messrs T. Kennedy Macdonald & Co., should be well attended, as the whole are for unreserved sale. Special attention 18 allied to Rapp and Haro's price list, which will he found on our frontpage. For clothing, boots; ironmongery, and grocery, they will be found the cheapest wid best house in the trade.—To FarmersJnst armed, Harvesting Gloves; 1,009 Corn Sacks, equal to new, at 7s 6d pe>-dozen,-[Advt.] Carterton v Maaterton.—Ab a proo of who are the cheapest storekeepers in the Wainrapa we wish to draw, our readers' special attention to B. A. Gardener & Son's advertisement on our frontpage. Thiß firm is determined to keep up their reputation. From the time of their commencing business in Carterton they have repeatedly proved that they can withstand competition, no matter how strong. Jtis therefore ridiculous for another storekeeper from a neighboring township to post price lists to their customers and pretend to Bell at wholesale prices, when for the smallest quantities B, A, Gardener & Son supply goods in almost every instance 10 to 15 per cent oheaper, and in large quantities still further coaees sions are made.— lkovr
