The Wairarapa Daily. SATURDAY, DECEMBER 3, 1881.
The members of the Committee appointed to organise a woolen- factory in Masterton have decided to place a prospectus before the public. They do tliis to test not the feeling of the public /n its favor, because such 11 movement mii:ffc have the sympathy of every settler, but to guage the pockets of settlers ii) oiiiepj# pertain whether they have a sufficient myitis of cash to provide the necessary ways pd means. The fact that already onefonrth of tho proposed capital of illo, ooo is subscribed justifies the Committee in taking this step. The Committee may be said to have done its duty. It has carefully ascertained the cost of plant, site, and buildings, and it is in a position to say that if the public are willing to contribute the necessary .capital a factory will be established within a short period in Masterton, which will prove a permanent benefit to both twf} and country settlers, In placing a prospectus fyefore the public the preliminary labors of the i Committee are completed, and it will 1 now rest with settlers throughout the district to continue the project or abandon' it, It will not be without an effort that the balance of the shares offered to the public will be placed, A great many small shareholders,'a fair proportion of larger ones, and a few big ones, will be wanted to place the proposed Company on its legs, Every resident must, ns it' were, do what he can if the project is to be carried to a successful issue. It is not, we understand, the intention of the members of the sub-committee, to whom is entrusted the issuing of the prospectus, to incur other than nominal liabilities till a sufficient number of shares are applied for to warrant
racter. If the number of shares taken up prove unsatisfactory, the deposits paid on them will be refunded, minus a small deduction to cover preliminary expenses; but if, as we hope, the company floats,.prompt,, measures will be talcen'to'get it registered and in working order. On the one hand, a person applying for shares will, if the enterprise proves a failure, lose at the outside but a few shillings j on the other hand, should the movement prove a success, he will have assisted in establishing a new industry in the district which will benefit himself and every other member of the community,
Wn have just received a telegram stating that Mr Eichard Wakelin, the oldest journalist in New Zealand, and one of the ablest leader writers in the colony, died at his residence near Greytown last evening, in the sixty-sixth year of his age. In the Wairarnpa especially Mr Wakelin's long services to the public should secure for him the grateful memory of its settlers, In old days when no newspaper was published in the district ho advocated its interests, us no other, man could, in the Wellington papers, aud he is entitled to be regarded as the father of journalism in tlio Wairarapa.
Tnu special telegram which we published yesterday from Fer.therston stated that the show of hands was in favor of Mr Bunny by about ten, We have subsequently learnt that the figures were Mr Buchanan 35, Mr Bunny 35, and Mr Boys 22, and that the Returning Officer gave his casting vote for Mr Bunny, We cannot, till wn hear further from our correspondent, explain how the apparent mis-statement in his telegram arose. As far as we curi learn the discrepancy is explained liy the Returning Officer counting the hands twice over, and obtaining a different result for each division.
