The Masonic Brethren of St. John's Peatheraton, aronbout building a Masonic Hall, having purchased a quarter aero of land at the corner of Fox and Wakofieldiato«irfcr-Hmt pur-psser- - The Masterton Amateur Dramatic Club announce thoir Bth and 9th entertainments for the race nights, next week. The pieces selected for this occasion are a domestic drama " The Chimney Corner," concluding with a grand concert, in which all the leading amateur talent of the district will be represented. Mr Renall has convened a''public meeting iu the Town Hall, Masterton, for to-morrow evening, at which discussion is invited. We are glad to see that Mr Renall has taken a proper course and abandoned the method of procedure which was in the first instance resorted to. Canvassing throughout the TaratahiCartertnn District is being prosecuted most energetically by the partizann of all three candidates; in fact, the thing is becoming almost a nuisance. One poor unfortunate man we hear was stuck up nine times in Cnrtorton yesterday, and he has taken a solemn oaili that he will only vote lor the one he was spoken to once for—so much for a properly organized Committee.

Things political are remarkably quie 1 at_ Featheratou, but for the two committees working energetically for the return of Mr Bunny and Mr Buchanan, one would hardly know that a contest was impending, We have not heard of Mr Boys having a committee at all in Feather--Bton, It is generally [unity well'understood, however, that everyone has made up his mind who to vote for. Mr Gordon Allen, we arc informed, is about to open a branch office in Carterton, and a relation of Mr L. Marks is to take charge. This well-known Wellington pleader will attend on Court days in the Wairarapa, This is war in the law trade of the Wairaiapa with a vengeance. However, the well-known ability of nur Wairarapa practitioners will doubtless cause the enemy to retire in a few months. In another place our re,'tilers will see by a letter from our correspondent in Wellington that Tciawhiti bids fair to bo a valuable reeling district, the show of golden stone being excellent. We have received some prospectuses of the Merope Company, which can he seen at our office. The secretary of the Company is Mr Herbert Dcvcril, of Wellington, who was t,be founder and secretary of the Albion Company, and of whoso intimate knowledge of the ground there can be no doubt. As will lie seen by an advertisement in another column, Mr Deveril is now receiving applications for shares. The Rev F. R. Seaborne gave a series of readings from popular poets in St Matthew's schoolroom last evening. He did not have a very largo audience, but it proved to he an appreciative one. The rev gentleman possesses considerable dramatic power, and passes from " grave to gay" from "lively to severe" with very little effort. His various selections were heartily applauded. At the conclusion of the programme the Rev W, - E. Paige, who presided, thanked Mr Seaborne on behalf of the audience for the pleasure which lie had given them, and expressed a hope that he would again vißit Masterton,

Mr R, H, Chinchen has just received a very handsome shipment of Christmas sjoods, including some very beautiful and novel Christmas cards, books, &c., which are well worth a visit of inspection. It is strange that the fad of the division of the Wairarapa into two electoral districts has not yet dawned on the minds of many electors, and that some persons imagine that at the coming election they can vote for two out of the three candidates for Wairarapa South. Candidates will do well to remind voters who are under the delusion that they can only back one favorite for the Assembly. At Mr Buchanan's meeting last evening an inebriated individual who was present fell asleep and soon the room resounded with the music emitted by his naßal orqan, and the laughter of the audience. He was awoke, and evidently had some idea of what the speaker had been saying, as l e asked him to proceed with his interesting remarks, and immediately fell asleep again. He was ultimately led outside, and found a lodging on the cold, cold ground.

The first annual general meeting of the subscribers to and shareholders in the Kuripilni Public'.Hall, Company is convened for Monday evening next, Mrs H, R Smith, of Clarevillo, announces that she is prepared to accept engagements as monthly nurse, and has no objection to go into the country if required, The following extracts from the Wanganui Herald are amusing:—Mr Renall, who was many years ago a member of the Assembly, is a man of liberal sentiments, a vigorous speaker, and trusted by those who know him. .... Sir William Pox is one of those Conservatives who would like to assume the stamp of Liberal, but that he is only a "sham" may be seen by his advocacy of Chinese cheap labor. In order to increase the fortunes of a few wealthy landowners he would degrade and pauperise the European laborer, running him by Mongolian competition to starvation point. .

The usual monthiy meeting of the Greytown Borough Council will bo held on Monday evening next, Arrangements are being made for holding an entertainment in Greytown to raise funds, for precising prizes for the scholars attending the Public Solium, The first part will consist of recitations, and part singing by tho children, (this in itself has always been the principle attraction at the School concerts). The aecond part will be filled by lady and gentlemen amateurs, the whole to conclude with a farce. As these entertainments have always been very successful iu Greytown we hope this one will be no exception to the general rule,

The election .of two members of the Waiohine River Conservatives to fill the places of Messrs W, Hammerich and M. Caselberg, resigned, took place in the Town Hall, Greytown, yesterday, More than_ usual interest was taken in this election, about 30 ratepayers being present. Mr A. L. Webster, the returning officer, having read the usual notices, the following gentlemen .were nominated Messrs H, Udy, jun.rfr Wyett, B. Kimberley, and P. Trottej. Carterton v Masterton,— As a proof nf who are the cheapest storekeepers in the Wairarapa we wish to draw our readers' special attention to B. A, Gardener & Son's advertisement on our front pajje. This firm is determined to kcep_ up their reputation. From the time of their commencing business in Carterton they have repeatedly proved that tliey can withstand competition, no matter how strong. It is therefore ridiculous for another storekeeper from a neighboring township to post price lists to their customers and pretend to sell at wholesale prices, when for the smallest quantities B. A. Gardener & Son supply goods in almost every instance 10 to 15 per cent cheaper, and in large quantities still further concessions aremnde,—(Advt,) To Farmehs.—Just landed, a large assortment of Scythes, Scythe-handles, Rakes, Forks, Churns, Milk Pans, to be sold at Wellington prices by Raff and Hare, of the Emporium.—[Advt.]
