The Wairarapa Daily. THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 17, 1881.
Mb Rknall, very foolishly, while training for a Derby, tested big powers on a County Plate, ami is possibly surprised to find himself last nt the post, He knew littie or nothing of County mailers, and possibly cared less, and the verdict of ihe ratepayers is a just one, It is alike honorable tu Mr McGregor and to the ratepayers that our old representative should have been placed in such a proud position on the poll. Mr Vile stood better that we thought he would. He gave, we understand, a pledge to many of those who voted for him that lie would resign bis seat at the Borough Council if returned for the County. This removed the only objection that we raised to his candidature, or was likely to be raised by the public, and, had he made it earlier, he would have been returned; as it is, Mr T, E, Chamberlain lias beaten him. The result of this Mnstertnn Riding election is a satisfactory one. The return of Messrs Booth and Boys for Carterton is equally gratifying, but the defeat of Mr R, S. Hawkins for the Alfredtowu Hiding is a blow to the County.
We have receivpd from Mr Charles Rooking Carter the manuscript; of a history of the Wairarapa Small J/arms settlements. Mr Carter desires us to publish it in the form of a pamphlet, and wo shall, in obedience to his wishes, issue it in such a form at as early a date as possible. The pressure of election business will delay it for a few days, but as it is not a matter affecting the pending elections it will probably receive more consideration when the present political excitement has partially subsided,
Several reports aro crowded out of our present issue, for which we must ask Ihe indulgence of our rendus. Mr 6, Bectham held two very successful meetings at GUdstone 011 Monday las, It will ho seen by our telegrams tlmt the Volptcers wili arrive by the last train this evening, Notice is given that a public supper to the Masterton Volunteers will tako place at Corbelt's Empire Hotel this evening. Sijiith the yiuo-cljair, The congregational t.ea i)ieetjn» in the Presbyterian Church, Mastortmi proved to be a great success yesterday, the tables being crowded with successive relays of guests ; both old and young taking an equal interest in the pleasant gathering . A c'lnsideraMe number of Mastertou residents have proceeded to town to-day To-morrow a walking performance will commence in the, Public Hull, Carterton when 11G miles ace to be stepped within twenty-four hours. The novelty of this species of entertainment in this district will no doubt attract a largo number of visitors, Mr D. F. McCarthy's price list appears 011 the back page of our supplementary sheet.
During the past month nine of the old bridges on the bush road have been pulled down. In every instance (hey will bo replaced by culverts. The Maslerton and Woodville road will soon be one of the best-appointed lines in tbe colony. It is curious to notico how Mr Benall's views cluuiLie when any advantage to himself is obtainable. At the last general election ho disapproved of votes of confidence, and even hold that requisitions were an infringement of tho principle of the ballot; but then ho was not a candidate. Now that he is one ho accepts a requisition, and seeks votes of confidonco. The principle of tho ballot box roqniies to be stretched when MrßenaH'a name is on the ballot paper. The county roll for the Masterton Riding was found yesterday to bb very incomplete' many ratepayers being disfranchised from this cause. It was 'made up by the late County cleric at a time when he was in feeble health and this probably accounts for its unsatisfactory stale,
A requisition is being sigaeJ in Greytown asking the most energetic business man in that township—Mr F, 11, Wood—to come forward for the Mayoralty, The annual examination for scholarships at the Wellington College was hold at the Normal School commencing yesterday. The liov, J. Wojt and Mr J. Gammell were tho gentlemen appointed as examiners A similar examination was held at Greytown,
Ml' Levin says Ills experience liiis taught him tliat the ro:>l work of Parliament was elTeclcd in the Committee rooms and lobbies of the House and furihur that the members who carried the greatest powor mill weight wore tlioso whose voices wore seldom heard but when raised werelistncd to. Between : thirty and forty members of the Grey town volunteers rolled up at the uaual wookiy drill on Tuesday evening, Captain Tully being in command, Lieutenant Avery being also present. Tljo Company had about an hour's drill under Drill-Intructor Bezar, when the Quadrille Corps hold one of their popular assemblies, dancing being kept up till 11 o'clock to tho strains of tho band.
A correspondent writing from South Grcytown eays; -That anyone passing the site of the late " Rising Sun Hotel," when tho breezes are gently wafted from the west, are assailed with an offensive odour arising frpni the putnfied remains of a dead horse, which had been buried thoro, as it is only just beneath the surface the dogs are continually scratching the earth off it. _ He suggest that the Borough Council should take some steps in the matter.
The Carterton Volunteers who went to tho front reached homo yesterday evening, l'hey were met by Captain Snodgrass and their other comrades at the station, and marched to tho Hall, headed by the bands Thpro they were dismissed after hearty cheers bail been giyei) for them. Mr H, H, Wolters, the returning officer declares Messrs Dngald Macquarie, Duncan McGregor, T. E, Chamberlain, Williiim Booth, Burton Boys, Charles Pliarazyn, Janios Donald, and Coleman Phillips duly elected for tho Wairarapa West County Council. The clan of the proposed new Working Men's Club, Groytown, is to be seen at the Wairarupa Institute. It is that of a one-storied building, having a frontage of 40 feet, with a doptli of (JO feet. The enhance hall is in the centre of the building ; on the light is a spacious billiardI'oinii j on tho left a reading room ; and, at llie rear of that, a card-room, There is also a largo room for meetings, itc„ kitchen, and custodian's apparlmonts, anteroom, storeroom, k. If the above plan is adopted, it will be,a great ornament to the town; and, although the. late building was a tivo storied one, the present one promises to he more convenient to the members. The meeting of shareholders is next Saturday week, and not next Saturday as wo reported yesterday.
Now is tho season lor transplanting flowers. In view of this Rait & Hare, of tho Emporium, have purchased 100 dozen Flower Pots, all sizes, which they are selling at Wellington prices.—[Ad,] '
