The Carterton Rabbit Trustees on TueS'

The minutes of the previous meeting havin<,' been road and confirmed, the Treasurer reported the assets of the Board us follows, viz., credit balance at Bank £22 19 lid; cash 'in hand, L2B 2s; rhodium, Lll 8s; phosphorus, LlO 10s. The correspondence

was of an unimportant nature, referring mainly to rales levied. The accounts passed for payment were Messrs Beckett & Co., 14s (id ; K. Pi. Armstrong, LI 2s 6d; 0. H. Gayfer, Ll2 Is. The Inspector laid his usual monthly report on the table which was of a very satisfactary nature, and was duly adopted, and the new Act was discussed. The Trustees did not resign in a body, although the question of their doing so was mooted, but

after some consideration of the several clauses adjourned any further meeting until the Government reported what steps they intended to take with regard to Boards framed under the Act of 1880.

The TnrataliiCarlerton Highway Board met at the Institute on Tuesday last. The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. Instructions to the Clerk as to outstanding rates brought the business to a close about 4.30.

The neighborhood of St Luke's Church, Gruytdwn, wore an air of gaiety yesterday niornintc, on which occasion Mary Ann, the eldest daughter <>f Mr T. Kempton jun., of Greytown, was led to the altar by Alfred, the youngest son of Mr W. Allen, of Wellington, The bride and bridesmaids were very prettily dressed, and were conducted up the aisle by the bridegroom and groomsmen with every degree of confidence. The Rev H. V, White performed tlio ceremony very impressively, afler which fhe company were ontortained at, the residence of the bride's grandfather, Mr T. Kempton sen.

The usual wceekly drill of the Greytown Volunteers was very well attended on Tuesday evening, the company being under the command of Captain Tully Drill Instructor Bezar drilled them for about an hour, when Lieut. Cameron put them through the sword exe:cise, which was very creditably done. It was resolved that that the Saturday afternoon drills bo discontinued fur the present, as it was thought that Bring, cricket,, and other outdoor pastimes would greatly interfere with them. A letter was read from Mr W. Bock, offering a badge, to he Bred for by the Corps, and stating the conditions under which it was to bo competed for. It was unanimously resolved to accept it, entries for competition to close on Tuesday evening next. Next Sunday being the first Sunday in the month there will he a Church parade, and on Tuesday evening next inspection parade.

On Tuesday the two visiting constables were in Greytown, and created quite a scare as they were seen wending their way towards the bush in the rear of the township, and ruinor was very busy as to the cause of their visit, it being freely whispered that a "still" had been discovered there. Presently the constables were seen emerging from the bush in company with one of our respected settlers, whom they escorted to Quin's Hotel, It was generally expected he wnuld go away wiili the 'Bus, which was on the point o( starting, but the anxious watchers were disappointed. On enquiry we found that all he had been-guilty of was that he had written and offered his services in the Armed Constabulary, force, and he was ''wanted" for his measure, which the constables toekj and found to be sa.tisfac- | tory to all parties concerned, '

It will be noticed that thescorS of Mr Anketell at the rifle match yesterday, 53, was not only the best one on the field, but the highest one'that has, as yet, been made in the district,

The Upper Tauern road must be a " pilgrim's progress 1" A well-known settler coming into Masterton yesterday fro n that ilk could hardly be recognized through his orercoat of mud, and the natural color of his horse was a matlter of pura speculation. A London telegram dated the 20th inst. reports that in the wool market competition by both Home and foreign buyers is active, and is increasing. The market s firmer. Trade in the manufacturing disricts has improved.. Up to date 244,000 hales have been sold. The sale programme has been curtailed by five days.

Messrs Neill & Cockerv have imported

another 'bus. This vehicle was once known on the Hutt road as the " Duke of Edinburgh." It should, however, from its enormous dimensions, he termed the

" Leviathan." It is said to be nimble on its wheels and to run smoothly, but in size it is absolutely " Gampisli." ivlr J, 0. B. Golder, the prophet, is in Masterton. Last night the Sergeant of Police wai called upon to aot as umpire between him and hia better half who has been living apart from him in Masterton for the past twelve months. Mr Golder desires Mrs Golder to join him at Waipawa but'she prefers to remain in Masterton. The Sergeant had to threaten to lock them both up in one cell before he lie could make them understand the inutility of.appealing to him at ,the small hours to settle a matrimonial difference, The Waihakeke School Committee which evidently believes in corporal punishment, has prayed the Board to vaccinata school children. If it be expedient to vaccinate pupils it is surely necessary to do as much for teachers. Why, too, should not the members of School Committees be lanced, and members of the Board be innoculated. The latter should of course be lymphed first as an example, and if they were supplied with vaccine from a really healthy baby, what an improvement to thoir wisdom and understanding might net he obtained. At a meeting of the Education Board held yesterday ive learn from the Post that regarding the complaint preferred by Mr Freetli, of Masterton, relative to the infliction of corporal punishment at the Masterton school, the local school committee wrote to the effect that the matter had been carefully considered at a special meeting, when it had been resolved that the Committee were perfectly satisfied with the good conduct of tho scholars and the discipline maintained, Should the Board desire a further investigation it would devolve upon that body to appoint a member to conduct it, as tho Committee would then really find itself in the position of a defendant, The Committee concluded by enquiring whether "every box on the ear," or" cut with the cane," had to be registered by schoolmasters ? In the brief discussion which this communication provoked, Messrs Hutchison and Bunny observed that the letter seemed to evade the real point at issue, while other members agreed that in no case ought scholars to be struck on the head—a course of punishment which was of a very injurious character. Mr Blair remarked that the committee being satisfied in regard to this matter, lie did not soe how the Board could go behind it. It was then resolved to forward a copy of the circular re corporal punishment to Mr Freetli.

It is a fact that Messrs Gardener and Son sold last season more sheep shears than the whole of the Wairarapa storekeepers combined, and this season it is their intention to offer the 100 dozen pairs which they have imported at less than Wellington wholesale prices. We cannot understand how this well-known firm sell all their goods so wonderfully cheap. Their stock is splendidly assorted, and we would call special attention to their magnificent stock of drapery, which surpasses any we have yet seen in the Wairarapa. [ADVT.I
