THE TE WHITI SCARE. < The latest intelligence from Opunake says that the Defence Minister anticipates no difficulties with the Natives yet, but he approves of the action of settlers in preparing for eventualities. Many conflicting rumors are afloat on the plains, but the general consensus of opinion is that Te Whiti has been coerced into violent speech-making by the reckless membeJs of his tribe. Tito Kowaru and 200 followers have gone to Parihaka, carrying with them all their goods and belongings. They are armed with axes and fernhooks. At Hanera and Manaia the European males are enrollingas Volunteers mounted and infantry.
