MR BEETHAM IN EXPLANATION.

Sis—l have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of a letter from the Town Olerk of the 17th inst. j alio, a copy of the Wairampa Daily containing the report of a meeting of the Wairarapa West County Council. .. With reference to the report ■of my ■ remarks by the Daily,l have to state that the report is substantially correot. J I had been in correspondence with Mr Brown on the subject of proposed amendment! in the Municipal Oorpn rationi Act. One of Mr Brown's suggestions was an amendment providing a similar power for the Borough Councils to that possessed by the County Councils, viz., l power fo , contract with any other local the construction and maintenance of boundary bridges. As during my presence the County Council were diicussing the Waipoui question, I thought that a good opportunity oSered .to i obtain the views of the Council upon the subject. I. was of course aware that nothing I could do or tay could in auy way pledge the Borough Council to any course of .action, I considered the proposed amendment as one of general application, I cannot see that either the action of Mr Brown or myself has been in any way detrimental to the interests of the Borough of Masterton. Mr Brown's suggestion 1 proved that he understands the provisions' of Local Government Acts, and also that he has an appreciation of the amendments necessary to insure increased power and facility of administration. ■ I have, &0., .
