Notxe is given of an election, by Mr H. H. Woltcrs returning officer for the Carterton riding of the Wairarapa West County. The nomination is fixed for Friday, the 22nd inst., and the poll, if required, on the 27th inst.

On Thursday last Mr Bunny presented apelition from Mr A.B. Jackson, who was injured on the Wairarapa railway line last September, such petition praying for compensation. He hoped that the Government would refer it to the committee, as it was a case worthy of the consideration of the Government.

On Wednesday evening the first of a series ,of winter evening entertainments which are to take place fortnightly came off at the Institute, Carterton, in aid of the building fund, Mr Burton Boys, J.P., occupying the chair.' The opening overture was conducted by Mrs and Miss Palmer. The hall was pretty well as full as it could he—the audience numbering some 250. Mesdames Watts, and Palmer presided at the piano throughout the evening, and as their talent is very well known it would be but painting the lily to say more than that they, from first to . last, displayed their wonted skill and mastery over the instrument; and the thanks, not only of the audience, but of the ladies and gentlemen who took an active part in the entertainment, are undoubtedly due to these Jadies. Mr Sindgrass opened the vocal portion of tlie concert with" Alice, Where art Thou?" which he rendered in his customary quiet style, but very effectively; being followed by Mrs Watts with the' "Lover and the Bird," The same lady also sang, later on, " Golden Dream," and, as a duet with her daughter, the old but sweet duet, »I Would that My Love"; and, with fclr Harding, "The Convent Bell's," which net with well-merited applause from the audience. Mr Boys gave the only reading of the evouing—"Britomavfc"— displaying his usual eloquence in its delivery. A member of the Tuis, Mr G. Dellar, then sang Braham's great song, " Will o' the Wisp," and before the close of the evening " Tliy Voice is Near Me" ; which won an encore and was duly responded to. Mrs Cuff, who had kindly come from Greytowu to assist, san» "The Bling Girl to Her Harp," and ". The -Voice, of the Wind" very sweetly,'. Mr Harding kj-ing disposed of "The Tar's Farewell," Herr liundqvist gave an operatic'selection 01. tlie yiplin, being accompanied by Mr Keissenberg. 1 jThe comic element, was entrusted j to j Mr i King, another Tivi, who, in fiuTcostume as one of our volunteer warriors', bold, amused us with "Tootletum, Tootletum Ta," Mrs Palmer brought back.to us fond memories of the past with " Home, Sweet Home" (pianoforte solo), the enterjtainnientbeirigconcluded about 10 p.m. with .the -National' Anthem, in which many of .the audience j.ojned. We are. very glad to see these en,tertainmsn)s'renewed, as in'these'conn try districts we must, to a large extent, depend upon our own efforts and those of kind friends, to provide public amusement for ourselves; and most .certainly of all the events that have been given in Carterton, tha,t : 'of Wednesday last was thempst successful and'seleot that we have ever had the pleasure of reporting; and we trust that the committee's efforts will be crowned with an equal if not a greater mede of success tlirolihgout the season.

A special meeting, of the,Masteiton Institute Committee was held yesterday.. Present—Messrs Feist (chairman), Bod : dington, Bennett, Payton,' V'ile, Sellar, and Holdaway. Before the business commenced, there was an irregular discussion as to whether the meetings of the Institute Committee! Were j open tojthe press. It was decided that' they were. The chairman ; explained that' an application' for the use of jihq building had been agreed to by members of the Committee, but as some opposition had been manifested to the proposal by ratepayers, a special meeting had been convened. Mr Payton said he had suggested that the meeting be called because,' though.the consent of members had been given, no formal application had been received or dealt with, and it was desirable, itihi's opinion, that the application should be disposed of in a regular manner. The application made in. the name of Mr A: I R, Bunny forjjje tlie Institute for J Friday from i p.m., for the. sum of two guineas, was then read;- It was rqsqlved-' that the application be granted, and that the secretary be authorised to grant any similar applications on the same terms. Mr Boddington pointed out : .that the Committee received the same. simi in the present instance as would ba paid for the Town Hall, and as the latter provided a piano arnltho former did not, lje considered that the Committee iwero well paid. The Chairman, by request, read a clause in the Act which showed that the, Committee had power to make rule? for' regulating the admission of the public. Mr Carrsaid'ihe impression that the!lnstitute: committee had in the present'instance 1 granted a favor to a special'application was altogether a misapprehension. The present happened to be the first application of the character made to the committee, but there was no reason why any other which followed should not be dealt with , on the same basis. ' Mr' Holdaway: supported the resolution passed,- but understanding that, there might be anor'gaujsed opposition, he was not sure whether they could out. Mr Boddington said he looked at ttie Act at the Police Station, where he went to obtain a copy of it, and found that the< committee; had full powers. The Police would not hesitate to carry out instructions from the committee. Mr Vile considered that fhe necessity'for police intervention youid notarise. Mr payton concurred and pointed out that the committee h'a'd. not author]sed communication with the police many j form, and.if any'proposal to that effect were Mde/to should' vote 1 - against'if.' • The Chairman, expressed '-his gratification that the disijussioii'bad' taken the coarse it had done, and the meeting adjourned. 1 ;
