T1 ItfBOJI 008 OWN UOBRESPONDENT] J ' r f f) rj - •{, (Ms ist, 188 L .'now) cannot fail to be struck with the excellent appear;a'tibe[dfjthe'roads as compared with the state thev were in last winter, For the time of <year they, ?r,e certaiuly excellent. On Sunday morning last we were alarmed jby a partshook.of .earthquake. Jipil sorryf to say ciinnotj prkferid ito give you the apparent direction, as I was i" otherwise occupied at the time/'orjin other words I must confess that I wasconsiderably alarmed. The time was ab'outls.22 a.m.. The damage done here-: was but alight. The school chimneys, th'ope in very much fnudjMfosri Dillon and Peagrims also experienced a similar annoyance.-r While on this subject I am glad .to note that the Bca'rd •have i I. o|i had .occurred;) Mr; Mack?y, ;'the J !chairman ithßißtord.!.* j -ii icahnot congratulate -the.-Education Board oil their resolution 'concerning" the attendance at'the TetiuP school! I consider'that we ; are' ; mUch to'be'.pitied |in having such miserable roads. Had'the Board asked the Government to place on the j .estimates a,' sum sufficient for the gravelling 7 ofi'ths main roads in the district,',the attendance would probably be much" benefited thereby. They shoiild attack the root -of the evil. The attendance is. nof ,higher than. v it : has ever been,'arid ; I Mrdly' 1 think it a 'stroke :of policy, on their part to hamper the committee and teacher just as their efforts are beginning to bear a little fruit. . I believe Mr Bunny, when he was in the Provincial Council, contended that a large sum of money was due to thiß district; If that gentleman were now to endeavor to get this debt paid, he would earn the thanks of all here.. We have an areai of'some 1800 isquiirk.miles with but one school, which costs the Board a mere trifle to keep up. The Government are drawing, immense sums.in taxes from this district, and'not a tenth part,;< or even less, finds its way back in the shape of expenditure or grants. 1 . On Sunday last the Eev Father Halbwachs held services in St Joseph's Church. As the building was not quite completed, it was not ; formally. opened. The. ;Eev, Father expects to open.it. in September, and it is hoped that His Lordship the Bishop will be able to consecrate it in October, ; i
