GOOD TEMPLAR'S FETE.
The annual fete of the Amalgamated Lodges of Grey town, Carterton and Maaterton was bold at the Pastoral Show Grounds, Oartorton, yesterday. The weather, on the whole, was fine, though the wind was a little boisterous in the afternoon, and a slight shower compelled visitors to hoist umbrellas or seek shelter for a few moments towards evening There were between 200 and 300 present, including members from the three Lodges, the Bands ot Hope, Maslertonaud Greytown, the Carterton Juvenile Templars, and a number of visitors.. ,
The business of the day commenced with a procession from the old Town Hall, The Greytown Volunteer Band (assisted by some members of the Carterton Band) under the leadership of Mr P. Linn, headed tho procession, followed by members of the Order, and the Bands of Hope and Juvenile Templars bearing flags and banners. When the ground was reached the procession broke up and all commenced to amuse themselves after their own fashion, A programme of sports was prepared, swings erected, croquet grounds marked off, and cricket and rounders started. The stewards on the ground ware Brothers Cheshire, Gaul ton, G. Bumble, and G. A. Fairbrother (secretary), of Carterton; Bros. Girdwood.Baillie, and Prentice, of Mastorton; and Bros. Rush, Wilkie and Robinson of Greytown-all of whom worked well to make the affair run smoothly and pleasantly; and though (hose preeent did not seem much inclined to compete in athletic sports, everything did go off pleasantly,, croquet, swinging drophandkerchiefj &c.,being the favorite amusements. A first-class tea was provided by the committee, a great variety of tempting edibles being done full justice to. Tho band played at intervals, and assisted greatly to make the day pass enjoyably. The Secretary, Bro. G. A. Fairbrother, was indefatigable/and but for his perseverance in hunting up competitors the programme of sports would have been a failure.
We noticed two or three of the gentry who usually frequent race courses, at the gate with "games," but they were not ■allowed inside. Wo understand the affair, though enjoyed by those present, was not a'fmancial success, which is more to be regretted, as the committee will have to make up deficiencies out of their own pockets, We give the results of the various events, without comment, as there was practically no competition. Mr Hansen acted as handicapper and starter:—
