to the services of Or Russell. They could not vote any salary or fee to a Councillor, hut ho would move-That the sum of £6O should be voted to the Mayor as salary, which should be handed over by him to Or Ruaaell.

There' was' -no ;, doubt tha't' Gr ; Russell, as ame.mber ; of-.;the-.'VYorks.Comr', mittee, had saved the Council a great deal, but if the work of the Committee'' became too heavy for .them they should decline to sacrifice theuselves on the altar of public service, but should resign and appoint a paid servant.
Cr Biah, though fully acknowledging the services of Cr Russell, could not vote hi favor of granting him a sum in an illegitimate manner. •
His Worship would say a few words ou this matter. Cr Russell had given him Borne trouble tin one.Or'two occasions, through non-attendance to Works Committee duties, but for a long'time past he had dono all the practical work, the speaker only acting as a sort of clerk to him. His Worship regretted very much that they could not give him a direct vote for ;hia past services. .With regard to the future, he' considered that as the most difficult of the Borough works were done, there would not be a great lot for the commitfoo to do. There was not a bridge required in the Borough, and the. only piece of road nonopened was the ox-' tension of Bennington's line, which would havo to be soon seen to; He did not like, the proposal bofore the meeting, which simply meant to evade the law, but he regretted that tho Council could notin'some way recognise Or Russell's professional services to the Borough. Cr Bentley, in bringing the matter before the Council, expected to have more support from Crs who had expressed an opinion that something should be done to acknowledge Cr Russell's services. Tho only way this could be dono was to vote the Mayor a salary and let him hand it over to Or Russell, and that was the reason he had moved his resolution. After one or two further remarks tho matter was allowed to drop, and tbo Council adjourned. .
