EDUCATION BOARD.

The usual monthly meeting of the Education Board took place on Wednesday' last.
Present—Hon 0. J. Pharazyn (chair man), Archdeacon Stock, Mr Bunny, i M.H.R., Mr Hutchison, ,M, H. R., Dr Neßiiisu, Mr J; R.Blair, Mr Ghas,Pharazyn, Mr Robt, Lee (secretary and inspector), and Mr Dorset (assistant secretary). . The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed.
A statement of finances was submitted, showing a balance on the-building fund of £219014s 2d, aud on the general account of £967 153 lOd, Tt was stated that the cost of additions required to existing schools would be £1759105, and would include two class rooinß at Newtown (£260); additions to girls' school, Buckle-street (£500); and extras Upper Willis-street(£s2lsa). The proposed works were agreed to. In reference to a suggestion of the Masterton School Committee, it was resolved on the motion of Mr Ohas. Pharazyn, seconded by Mr Bunny, that the proposal of the committee for an exchange of sites be agreed to, the architect to prepare plans of a school for 400 children, at a coat nol to exceed £I2OO, subject to the approval of the Government (the school being erected on trust property), and to their bringing in a Bill to validate the exchange. Messrs Bunny, Hutchison, i aud Blair were appointed a committee to confer with-the Government on the subject, and,to report to the next Board meeting. An application by Mrs Scale (assistant, Greytown), for a bonus in consideration i of alleged additional work, was refused. : Dr Newman and Mr Blair brought up regulations for the Normal School, whieh they had drawn up. After some discussion they were adopted, with some slight amendments, the principal of which was one admitting private students at a cost of three guineas per term. It was unanimously agreed to accede to a request of the Government, and allow " The Temperance lesson Book" to bt used in schools under the Board, it being stated in a letter received from the In' Bpector-General that Sir William Fox in tended giving prizes of no less than £lO each to scholars for competitive examina. tion in the book. Mr Lee stated that, as anticipated, the Board, by means of the balance of £I2OO on the maintenance fund, had been enabled to carry on till Christmas last and show a surplus of £4OO. Upon thii basis he believed there would still be i deficiency of £BOO at the end of the current year. He suggested that in ordei to meet the case the Board should eithei reduce the capitation fund to school com mittees from 10s per head to 7s Gd o make reductions in teachers' salaries Many other Boards had taken the forme course. On thu proposition of Arcl deacon Stock, it was resolved to notify ! every teacher and school committee thf after March next reductions would hav to be made both in the capitation grai and the salaries, A communication was received froi a Mr Faber, requesting the to-onening < an enquiry why his child had bee expelled from the JFeatherston School. The letter was referred to. the school committee. After transacting some other routine business, the Board adjourned shortly before 5 o'clock.
