MASTERTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The usual fortnightly meeting of the Mastertou Borough Council was held'last evening. Present—His Worship the Mayor, and Crs Perry, Gapper, Bish, Russell, and Gray. The miuutes of the provinus meeting were read and confirmed. COMIKHPONDE.N'OE. Outwai'ds-r-To Moasrs Beutley Bros., accepting tender for Villa-street. To Mr A. Oo'ckburn, giving notice to fence in Hall-street; also, to cleanse the creek through his'town acre. Inwards—From the Olerk of the Mastertou Highway Board, stating that the Board withdrew its offer to contribute towards the cost of re-plaukiug the Waipoua Bridge. WAIPOUA BRIDGE. The Mayor did not think .the Board understood very well its position in the matter, as by the Act the Council .could recover from the County a .reasonable allure of the cost. He reeommended the Council to take no notice of the Board's communication. Or Russell considered tlio report of the Highway Board a gross iiißult. FINANCE COMMITTEE, The report recommended the following paymentsßorough Inspector,sundries, £ls.s H; printing and advertising, £1 19s Gd; \Y, 6. Beard, costs Assessment Court, 1878, £4 4s. Sir,-—I submit the following report ou the works in progress in tho Borough of Maslerton : Victoria street.—Mr Hounslow is progressing vory well with his contract at present, but it will bo some time before the formation is completed. Villa-street.-r Messrs Beutley Bros, have_ commenced their contract for forming and metalling 7 chains of Villastreet, and are progressing very well at present Metalling railway road by Government.—Several loads of metal are required in certain parts of Queen-street, King-street, .aud Chapel-street where there are pools of water laying. If the gravel was put in now it would soon bind in and make a good road. GKOKGK Hdtton, Overseer.

He said it was necesiy to pay for them, but the money woulipe well spent, as ratepayers were in lie habit of seeking general informational . the Borough office. • Motion seconded by Cr Russell nd agreed to, BOROUGH TRACINGS. Cr Gappor stated that some free years ago tho Clerk was instruoted'jget a tracing of the Borough, Mr Bpwn paid for it, but had never been iimbursed the cost of it—£s. He mved that the amount be paid, Tho motion was agreed to, TBEDOOACT.

The Mayor, in reply to Or Gaper, ■ pointed out that the Trustees of Bbbit' Districts could givo a certificate' jrhich would exempt rabbit-dogs from thelee. Or Gapper, in appointing a. Renstrar, would like to see an amalgamajon of offices, which would enable a'departmental savins; to be made. | Or Russell thought that they'neid.not tako much trouble about retrenclment, because they only Bpent- about oneeighth of their revenue on expenses, whila other bodies spent a third. j

Or Bish stated that last year many dogs were not, paid for by their owners, and under the higher tax this year, still more persons would seek to evade the fes, unless the Council made efficient' .arrangements for the collection of the impost. • Or Gapper movod—That Mr Brown be reappointed Registrar, 'and that the Counoil Chambers be the registered office." The motion was seconded by Or Ruuell and carried. AMALGAMATION OF OFFICES. Or Gapper thought that they ought to rotrench their expenses at least ten per cant. He considered that .the offices of valuator, returning officer, &6., should be amalgamated. He moved that a statement of all fees and expenses/paid by the Council, with the names of the persons to whom they are paid, be laid before the next meeting of the Council,. The motion was agreed to.
