The Wairarapa Daily. FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 26, 1880.

The Masterton Fire Brigade achieved a well-earned triumph on Wednesday last j but though they • won a battle, and their pluok and perseverance was generally admitted and admired, it was eYident that there were weak points in their organisation, and if we allude th theße little drawbacks, it is with no desire to detract from the great good which they accomplished, but rather tb induce the public to co-operate in making the brigade stronger and more efficient. It was observable on the' occasion of the late fire, , that .the brigade was not strong enough to bring out both engines simultaneously, and the second hose was decidedly late in the field. The ladders, buckets, and : axes which did such good service were: also very late 011 the ground. Again,; pumping was more than once nearly suspended at a critical moment because there was no official representative of the brigade in charge of the engine, work. All these defects arise, in our opinion, from a want of hands. .Ten or twelve more members require to be' added to the brigade's-roll in order to man tte two engines, £nd we trust that an efiort will be made to obtain this additional assistance.; Many will probably come, forward after seeing the way in whioh the brigade won its spurs as the late fire, It was the first pitched . battle of that body with a serious fire, and all honor is due to it for the victory' it won, and still greater honor.because the battle waa gained after the brigade had been almost.beaten back and conquered. There are the makings of heroes among.raany, members of the brigade, and the feelings with whioh they are regarded:iii Masterton is decidedly one of pride. • Under these circumstances yji/should-,think that plenty,pf"good • men will be found ready and anxious to join a i reputation for itself.
