We are pleased to learn that the new sngine for the Masterton Volunteer Fire Brigade, will arrive at Greytown this evening, and at Masterton to-morrow morning.
It is almost needless to remind our renders that the poll for the election of Councillors in the Masterton Borough Council takes place to-morrow. We hope the burgesses will take some little interest in the election, and place the right men in.
Near Newport in Wales, a short time ago, the gas in a coal-pit was ignited by a flash of lightning. There were in the pit 119 persons, and every soul perished from the explosion. The Legislative Council threw out the Deceased Persons Estates Duties Bill after it had passed the Lower House. This cuts £20,000 off the revenue estimated by the Treasurer, and with the £60,000 or £60,000 out off by the reduction of the beer duty to 3d, must seriously interfere with his financial scheme. The football match, Greytown t Masterton, will take piace on Saturday, Sep. 11, in Mr J. Drummond's paddock. The Masterton representative team will play all comers to-day and to-morrow. Play to commence at 3.30. The following are tho names of the Masterton representative team .'—Allen, Oowan, Garrard, Harrison, Hogan, Holmes, Bunny, Girdlestone, McKenzie, Meredith, Jones, Perry (2), H. Smith, and Wardell.
