WHAREAMA AND CASTLEPOINT.
fPBOM OUE OWN CORRESPONDENT]
July 20,1880. The fine almost summer weather, with westerly winds, has done much during the last week to dry up our muddy roads. The. Oastlepoint road, though still all but impassable for dray traffic, is in fair condition for horsemen, As anticipated in my last letter, the ratepayers -in- No. 5 Ward elected Mr Nioholis, of Ten.ui.as Warden in lieu of Mr Greenland, re-. signed. " \ The contractors for the MangapakehaUriti road (from the Mangapakeha bridge to Tenui) are on the ground ready to commence work. It is reported that the Oounty. Engineer has allowed the use of matai timber in the formation of the culverts on this line. ■ It is to be hoped.this is incorreot, or, if correot, that the Oounty Council will at once see fit to. have 1 the specifications amended. Totara in a short time will be procurable, from the Taueru, so that there is no necessity to use inferior timber: The district has' already suffered from a plethora'ef. blunders in the matter of road-making. Let us hope that they are not to be perpetuated for evermore. In consequence of the telegraph offices hi Tenui and Oastlepoint not being remunerative, the Government intend after the Ist August, to charge Is 6d per ordinary message of ten words, instead of Is as formerly. This, though not a pleasure to look forward to, is preferable to havjng the offices closed, contiugenoy that might have occurred. - •■. -*■
