CAUTION TO RABBIT HUNTERS
To the Editor of the Wairahapa Daily. Masterton, 7th July, 1880.
Sir,—ln a recent issue of your paper, people out of work were advised to get spades and go on the Opaki and dig for rabbits. It is desirable that such advice should be somewhat qualified, otherwise the occupation may prove the reverse of profitable. I imagine few landholders, if asked, would refuse to allow people to dig for rabbits, if they would undertake to fill up in a proper manner the holes they make; but as some persons now seem to think they have a right to dig for rabbits anywhere without asking permission, ahd to leave deep perpendicular holes in which horses and cattle might easily be entrapped, and have their legs broken, Offenders of this kind must not be surprised if they find themselves summoned to the R,M. Court, and proceeded against for both trespass and damages, Perhaps your publishing this may have the desired effect of ■ pointing out to rabbit-hunters the proper course for them to pursue. I am, &c., J. Valentine Smith,
