Councillors Vile, Renall, McCardle, Bish, Gapper, Woodroofe, and Perry. Some discussion ensued as to whether .the rate should be made payable in one or two instalments.' It was ultimately decided to make it payable in one. - - The resolution moved,at the former meeting re striking rate was then confirmed, the only dissentient being-coun-cillor Woodroofe. The Council then' went into committee ■on the question of local industries, At last meeting a letter was read from the Chairman of the Royal Commission on Local Industries, and the Committee now I met to prepare a report in accordance with the terms of the letter, to send to the Commission, which is now sitting at Timaru. A report was then drawn up, which will appear in our next issue. Before adjourning, the Mayor said he had interviewed Mr Maxwell (in the absence of Mr Blackett) while he (the Mayor) was in town, in reference to the river.protective works, Mr Maxwell informed him that the Government would take prompt steps in the matter, but what steps he (Mr' Maxwell) could not say. His Worship had also interviewed the UnderSecretary for Public Works on the taking on of local unemployed on Government works in course,of construction. The Minister informed him there must be some mistake in the matter, as Government wished to give employment to any unemployed on local works. Mr Knowles promised to bring the' matter under the Minister's notice. Two or three unemployed men had waited on him (the. Mayor) since his arrival back, seeking to obtain work. One man stated he was reduced to his last loaf, and had a wife and four children to support. . , Some discussion-then ensued as to the

advisability of employing: Unemployed on Council Works, such as stonebreaking.. The Works Committee were authorised to give.men employment at stonebreaking at 2s 6d per cubic yard.
