"CREDIT TO WHOM CREDIT IS DUE"
Totk Editor, of tfig' Waikabapa Daily. , _ Greytown, March 19. Sib,—An' impression seemed to prevail amongst some of the visitors''at-the latecricket match between-the Greytown and Bohemian Clubs, that the former team was not composed solely of. Grey town players, but picked from the Wairarapa Clubs. Your local stating that the victory was a " Triumph for the Wairarapa" would help to confirm the impression, unless contradicted. Doubtless it was a triumph for the Wairarapa, but gained entirely by Ukbttown. Not a member of the team but- resides withing ten minutes walk of the Post Office, the credit, therefore should be accorded to the enterprising team who have this season kept so well together and played' and beaten all comers. It is a team that the Wairarapa could well be proud to boast of; but the town that claims it should have its full share of the credit. lam &c., Cricket [The meaning of our local was that Greytown had gained a triumph for the Wairarapa ; we are surprised that anyone should have mistaken it.—Ed. W.D.] PRICES OF PRODUCE. IN .THE WAIRARAPA. To the Editor Wairarapa Daily. March 20. Sir,—ln looking through-the columns of.your Wellington contemporary, the. Evening Post, I noticed an advertisement in which -several articles of daily consumption are offered at a much less pricethan those at present ruling in the Wairarapa, For instance, potatoes were announced at 7s per cwt., price at present here being about 8s; onions, l|d per lb., 4d here; fresh butter, Is per lb, Is 2d or Is 3d here; cheese, 6d per lb, lOd here, Now, Sir, it' rather surprises a stranger coming amongst us that prices for the articles that we naturally expect be produced in the country districts should be retailed at higher prices than our Weiington friends can procure them at, I have also noticed in my peregrinations through the district (for be it known I am a great rambler) that oilmen's stores are much cheaper in Carterton than they are elsewhere in this district, I cau account for it in no other way, Sir, than that the Carterton public have a co-! operative store amongst them, this, I j should judge, tending to lower the prices. Carterton and Wellington are also cheaper in butchers' meat than Masterton, and the | butchers in those places have to pay higher prices for their sheep and cattle than are at present ruling in the districts surrounding Masterton. I should like some of your readers who may be better able to state the causes from which arise this inconsistency to do so, as I am sure they would-be conferring a benefit on myself as well as other townsfolk.
. .TJiankiing you for allowing me to trespass ao far ori your valuable apace, ' ; ' ' lam,&c., Fathee OF k LASGE FiMnY. •
