[To'th.9..Edifcor : WAißA»APA Daily;] Sir,—A little more than two years ago Mr Payton initiated a movement to bring Greytown under the Municipal Corporations Act. • At' first lie was opposed by the members of the Local Board which then existed, and had but little assistance from the settlers in the township, Mr F. H. Wood excepted. He succeeded, however, in getting, up a public meeting on the question, and, with the able assistance of Mr McCardl&j-who happened to be in the town on the . night the meeting was held, gained sufficient support to carry a Committee, for the purpose of drafting a petition, and getting a .Borough .established. Of that Committee Mr Payton was appointed Chairman, and he, in; Con• junction with his colleagues, in the face !°f. more than one .-serious obstacle, sue■ceeded in getting the Borough proclaimed. The Borough is now inj fair working -.order, and in a good financial position. ..'Through its instrumentality, Gwytown now possesses an importance as a municipal centre which it formerly did not possess as a Local Board. What is .more: advantageous, it enjoys an income available for public .works far in excess. oi ther amount which it obtained when it- was" under the Local Board Act. When it was first thought that a Borough was desirable, five settlers out of six were against the change,' it is extremely probable that five out of six now approve of- it. It is evident, if what I' stated is correct, that Mr Payton deserved the thanks of .Greytown for his exertions on' behalf of the township, and 1 was glad to notice by a local in your issue of to-day that after the lapse of some little interval an expression of gratitude has been formally recorded by a summons being taken out against liirn for ihe expenses incurred in drafting the petition and obtaining signatures thereto.
. Yours, ,&c., • . A Bokoughite. Greytown, March 20.
