The Odd Fellows' Hall was crammed, to hear Pastor Chmiquy lecture. The Rev Smalley, chairman, in introducing the lecturer, said that in spite of lying priests and editors Pastor Chiniquy would still be regarded as one of the noblest men living. The lecturer, in referring to the late riots, advised the audience not to conceal their colors but parade them about the streets on their shoulders, or else they had better be slaves to the Pope at once. LONDON, 2nd February. It is announced on good authority.that the Government intend at an early period next session to introduce broad and liberal measures with a view of reforming the Irish land laws. 3rd. News from Berlin states 40,000 men are about to be despatched to the Dutch frontier. The reason assigned for this movement is that it is made with the object of putting a stop ,to the extensive smuggling of Dutch goods across the German frontier which has prevailed. The New Zealand new 5 per cent debentures advanced, to lO - ■■■ ; ■ 4th. The excitement in Ireland is subsiding. The Home Rule League is in a moribund condition. The most respectable and influential leaders have become alarmed and displeased by the excesses committed by the agitators. . William Shaw, the member for Cork, has been appealed to to take the leadership of the Home Rule League, but positively declined to do so. The Treasurer also, resigned and the members are in a state of great disunion among themselves. It is thought probable under these circumstances that the League will soon break up.
