Mr Baillle wm roted; to the ohair, and haying tead convening the meeting, explained its object. were read and, confirmed, The following report of the retiring i Committee was then read
.KIPO&T. OP THE GBEYEOWN SOHOOI. COM- , MIME FOE THE MR ENDING 31ST DECEMBER, 1879. In presenting this the annual report of proceeding! of your Committee for the past year, they have in the first place to aokowledge the assistance rendered them by the residents of the district by their liberal contributions towards the objects your Committee have taken in hand, and although it was against their wish to appeal to the public, believing al they did that it was the duty of the Education Board to provide all the necessary accommodation for the comfort of the scholars, they felt that if the appeal was not made and responded to the school would have suffered and a certain amount of money would not have been spent in the district. The liberal action of those gentlemen who took part in the entertainment on behalf of the school also deserve special acknowledgment, as by that your Committee have been able to prepare a balance sheet which shews assets equal to liabilities. Your Committee has to congratulate you upon the rapid progress the school has made within the last few months, the average.attendance having reached. 191 for the past quarter, which in itself clearly shews the growing interest taken by the children in their school. Your Committee has great pleasure in being able to report upon the unity and good feeling existing between all the teachers and their pupils, and believe that the success of the late examination is mainly due to this,,,During the past year your Committee have held twelve ordinary and four special meetings, at which there has been'a fair average attendance. The amount of works aud improvements completed since their appointment has been above the average j amongst which are the erection of the new residence at a cost of £395, the extensive alterations to the school buildings at a cost of £l3lloa, and gravelling the plaground, &c., £20145. But notwithstanding the alterations already made, many necessary improvements are required, such as sheds, <k, and it is expected that in a very short time additional school accommodation will be re : quired. The ordinary grants from the Education Board, i.e., capitation allowance, amounted to £57105, while the residents contributed £5213s 6d. Your Committee believe that in consideration of this the Board should not decline to grant a further sum for additions. _ Your Committee would recommend to its successor that a paid secretary and treasurer be appointed, who shall keep a proper set of books, The present system of allowing all the work of correspondence, &c., to fall upon the shoulders of two members of the Committee should not be continued. Your Committee must express a hope that the present staff will continue to work as amicably as hitherto, for upon that solely depends the growing success of your school. 14 be necessary to elect seven householders, as a committee for the ensuing year, those retiring being Messrs W. Bock (Chairman), T. C. Barnard; Dp Smith, W. Fenton, R. Wakelin, and A. B. Jackson. AH are eligible for re-elec-tion.
