His Worship reported that he had been informed by the contractor that the plate laying was to be commenced this week, and no doubt the station buildings would be proceeded with at once. The meeting then adjourned, St. MATTHEW'S CHURCH. T* To tilt Editor of the Wahurapa Daily. • Sir,—l have read the report in your paper of to-day, of the meeting convened by. the Rev Mr Teakle as a meeting of "Churchmen 1 to consider ecclesiastical matters."' The only lay members who.are reported as taking action there are Mr Godfrey Russell, Mr Thos. Parsons, and Mr E. Quartly. Do they represent the Churchmen of Masterton } Ihave tried to collect from Mr Teakle's opening address, what actually was the expressed object of the meeting, but have failed, to do so, Is it-not really to carry out his avowed ..intention of doing all in his power to unseat the present Vestry? Mr Teakle has triod to force upon the attendants, at St Matthew's Church, a mode of teaching and worship not congenial to them, and the members of the present vestry are opposed to him on this account. Is it seemly or wise in Mr Teakle, having reference to his present temporary position here, fo adopt the course he has taken, which can only lead to ill-will, and cannot do any good. I would gladly, on this occasion, have treated the observations made at the meeting with silenpe (and I understand they were much stronger than as reported) but when two young Clergymen, neither of whom have probably been live years in the Church, get up a public meeting at which they are the leading if not the only speakers, to dictate to the whole body of Churchmen in Masterton, I think it is time for an old Churchman like myself to speak out and say, that, although I would receive with great deference an opinion expressed by any clergyman of my church so far as it commended itself to my conscience as right and just, and consistent with Christian teaching; yet when he descends from his high position as teacher to attack a respectable body of men without real cause, I cannot, after being fifty years a churchman and a communicant, bow to this sort of thing. There is surely some respect due to lay members of the church. I do not wish to enter here into the vexed question of communicant and non-communicant, but it is evident to my mind that the objection raised is not to an alleged wdrdly body of men m opposed to one of earnest Christians, but ratherto non-Ritualists as opposed to Ritualists. Mr Gossett is reported as saying " that he wouldfight the question out himself in its entirety, as it was a matter which affected the very heart of the Church of New Zealand. He, could hardly find words to express himself, so deeply did he deplore the matter.' 1 What does all this mean 1 I think, sir, you will agree with me that after what has taken place at this meeting it is next to impossible for any earnest member of the. present Vestry'to
remain a member of Mr Teakle'i congregation; ■-, . ■■■■■' '';■/'■'
I do not comment upon the insults :we, as a 'Yestry, have receivedv'frbnrMr Teakle-they are unworthy of tiotice-r but will conclude by adding that it is the;only occasion in my life,;invwhich I have come m collision with ai clergyman of whose congregation I was a member. •.; :> £?■ j Tarn, &b., ■., ■ i. '' v v^:;'- , | Mastertda/ Jan; 13,1880. ;■;•-• > '< ;?>' To Wairakapa Daily,,. , . SiE-Oan you inform me-(l.) By what Act of either the General or Diocesan Synods the Rev J. P. Teakle and G. Russell are empowered to call a meeting of church, members of the Parish of Mastorton to consider the state of ecclesiastical matters in the Parish, a Yestry being in legal existence? (2.) By what right Mr Gossett could take any part in the proceedings, he having ho locus standi as a Clerk, and certainly none as a laymai in the Parish ? (3.) Where' is the definition of a communicant to be found in any of the Acts or resolutions which have been enacted by the Church in New Zealand? I ask this last question because a confident assertion has been made that a great proportion of the present Vestry can be proved to be non-communicants. A valid answer to these questions will be of advantage to churchmen everywhere. I am, &c, Chukchmut.
