- [from our own correspondent] WELLINGTON. Tuesday. ■ The steamer Penguin went ashore today in a heavy gale at Tauranga opposite where the Taupo was lost. The passen-' gers were all saved. The steamer is expected to begot off next tide. Colonel Soratchley went round the harbor this morning in the Stella to inspect it, before proceeding south, but the weather was very unfavorable for the purpose-raining all day. If is understood a second trip will be made when the weather is more propitious. The tendei of W; G. Bassett, L 9.950, has been accepted for the Mangarohero contract of the Foxton-New Plymouth railway. Judge Johnston ruled that railway ser-. vants cannot claim exemption from service as jurors. . LONDON. January 12. Considerable agitation prevails in Ireland owing to the continued ejectment of tenants,, Several serious riots occurred, resulting in conflicts between the police and the mobs. No fatalities on either side are reported. Diving for bodies at the scene of the Tay disaster continues. Sweeping changes are being made in the French War Department; only staunch Republican Generals are kept in command. Similar changes are said to be imminent in other departments. There will be no general amnesty, but separate pardons will be granted to a number of remaining Communists. Recent comments of the German press on French politics caused much latent irritation in France.
