CARTERTON.

The Finance Committee of the Wairarapa West County met on Saturday, Councillors Pharazyn (Chairman), Moore, McGregor, and Boys being in attendance. The meeting were engaged until about 4 o'clock p.m. considering the balance-sheet of the county to the 31st March last as certified to by the Provincial Auditor, and his report thereon, and the county accounts generally.
Mr F. H. Wood, of Greytown, held one of his popular public auction sales of furniture and drapery at the Public Hall on Saturday afternoon. There was a fair attendance, bidding was pretty brisk and tolerably good prices realised, very few lots being left on hand when the auctioneer descended from the rostrum.
Spite of the threatening aspect of the weather, our rifle team, in brakes and on horseback, left here for Greytown about 6.30 a.m. on Saturday, but the match fell to the Greytown corps by a majority of about 30 points, I have no doubt your Greytown correspondent has furnished you witli the scores in extenso, so I will not supplement them, As I suppose the third match will be fired here, I shall hope to see the Carterton team then come out victors,
rifle match, The rifle match Greytown v. Carterton was fired at the Greytown butts on Saturday. The day was dull, but on the whole tolerably fair for firing. The Greytown men mustered at the Town Hall and marched to the butts under charge of Lieutenant Porter. Private Gregg and Corporal Webster topped the score for Greytown with 47 and 45, and Private Mason and Color-Sergeant Jury for Carterton with 45 and \% A subscription cup or medal is spoken of to be fired for by the members of the Greytown' team.
