TINUI
[from our own correspondent]. Dec. 9th. The weather continues very but on the whole the weather for the past week tow been favorable for shearing o| it rations. The roads are again passable and wool haulage is very brisk, quite a number of loads passing through daily from the Lower Whareama stations for Castlepoint. I hear there has been rather a serious land-slip close to the Mungapakeha bridge. This, it appears, will endanger the bridge if nut attended to early. The road over* seer, I believe, intends securing this from further damage as soon as possible. On Friday afternoon, Mr -Brown, Government Life Ixisuiatice agent, in company with Dr Smith arrived, and in ing addressed some thirty persons TWthe * Public Hall,. Mr Brown's address; was very interesting and the facts we re sultieient to convince the most pre- " judiced that Life Insurance was a boon to all. After the address several person* expressed a desire to insure, The doctor being near this was accomplished,. The next morning several were insured. Mr Brown and the doctor had just made a tour of the Coast from the Wairarapa Lake, visiting-all the settlers on the route . to Castle Point. It appears that this journey has had good results, for many have availed themselves of Life Insurauce. Had we received sufficient notice of the lecture, there would have been quite a muster.
Baturday was a very busy day here. The adjourned sitting of the R.M. Court commenced about 11a.m., H. S. Wardell, Esq., U.M., and Messrs Maunsell and, : Langdon, J.P.'s on the bench. Constable Darby v. lliddle,—This was a case of sly yrug Belling which occupied the Bench for some time. A line of £2O was inflicted, out at the intercession of Mr Skipper, the defendant's solicitor, the fine was reduced to £lO, This is now the third case of this description that the local constable has had since residing here. A few debt cases, one of which was settled out of Court, comprised the calendar. The Licensing Court camo off on Saturday, at which it was decided that at the annual Licensing Court in June next no license would be g-anted for the Tinui Hotel, unless fourteen rooms were added to the building now nearly finished. A plan of Mr McHutchon's new hotel at Whakataki, for which tenders are noir ~ being called, was handed in and approved of by the Bench. This hotel is to be finished by-June. An application for a license for Kenrick & Co.'a store at Whakataki was received, A plan of improvements was considered, the building to be called the Post Office Hotel. This application was adjourned for three months. - There appears to have been a petition against its being granted. The transfer . of the license of the Ohonga Ferry Hotel / from MrsStelin to Mr Baker was a 150,... made.
The Highway Board meeting occupied the greater part of last Saturday, and it: was well that our Public Hall had two apartments, otherwise this meeting would have been compelled to adjourn or sit late. However, the Board transacted their business with but little interruption after the accounts had been passed for payment. I hear it was decided to call for tenders forthwith for metalling i Ap ' 30 chains more of the road betw junction and theTinui so much in the right direction, but still much more is required. JJdnds not being available, of course it cannot be entertained at present;. Will not the Govern- * inent help tliia outlaying district, and do something to improve the main line 1 I see it is the intention of Mr D'Arcy, " of Mastertou, to run a coach here from Masterton as soon as the roada are passable, for the summer months. The obstruciions now on the road are not very numerous. If the ruts and holes were filled up this enterprise would very soon start. It is surprising how little interest is taken by the settlers generally in this : matter, whereas an undertaking of this sort should receive every encouraWieut for there is but little doubt thatT if this ' stared tangibly it would go a long way to keep the road in repair. On Friday next the cricket match comes off, and no doubt it will be quite a holiday. Chriitmas ii now fait approaching, and
I heai' nothing about sporu. Something should be got up to break the mcuiotouy. It is hoped the school children will have a treat, if tlmre is nothing e-;.e. Tiny dt.Bv:rve mo'iv;ii;ciiioir, v ml much credit is due tu Mrs Ll,maim, the iinnon, for tho advancement nv.do d'.'.rniq the past year. However, we look foi ward to a good teameeting and sport for the youngsters,
