MASTERTON HIGHWAY BOARD.

A meeting of the Board was held on Saturday last. Present—Messrs Bennett (Chairman), Donald, Miiichin, Buchanan, and Beetham. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. CORRESPONDENCE. —INWARDS. From Mr William Infos, requesting the Board to lay off a road to his property atPotirau. J From Mr Lett, informing the Board that John Haywood had taken the contract for the improvements on the Uriti road. From Mr D. Stewart, requesting the Board to lay off a road' to his property from the main road at Opaki. From Mr Bellairs, enclosing tracing of Mr Jacka.m's plan from Wainuioru and the East Coast. From Mr Morrison, as to the fence erected on the Manaia road by Mr R Donald, and stating that unless it was removed he would chop it down. From H. Manns, complaining that the men on the Forty-Mile-Dush road had not received one month's notice, and that the sum of £4 Ds had been stupped from their wages to pay for tools furnished to them. From Mr Pinkerton, relative to his application f..r payment for damage done to a horse belonging to him. Tenders for formation, etc., on the Ahianihe road, were received from £35 to £130; for the work on the Kaumingi wad, from £45 up to £G9. The Engineer's report was given in and read.

Miss Joans waited on the Board, relative to compensation for land taken for a road leading through her property. Mr Chamberlain requested that the Engineer should give an estimate of the expense of making the road through the Piarau swamp; he also stated that Mr Welch wished compensation for land taken for a road laid off by Mr King through his p-operty, but that in the event of the Board supplying him with wire for fencing in the same lie would not insist on his claim. HESOLUTIONS, That the Secretary write to Mr Baird to ascertain if Miss Jeans' Crown Grants have matured, That Mr Pinkerton be informed that the Board do not consider themselves liable tor the damage done to his horse, as although the culvert across the creek was washed away at the time, a temporary crossing had been made. that Mr Buchanan and the Engineer meet Mr Rowe relative to his account for work done and endeavor to. settle the balance due to him. That Mr R. Donald be requested to remove tho fence erected by him on the Manaia road, and Messrs Morison and Cockburn the stones laid down thereon and that an advertisement be inserted in the papers cautioning persons against laying down stones in the district without tho Board's sanction. That Mr Manns be informed that the men on the Forty-mile Bush were employed by the day and not entitled to a month's notice, and that they were allowed 3s per week more than the current rate of wages to pay for the tools, That W. lornB 1 application for a road to his place be held over till next meeting, and that the Clerk in the, meantime ascertain if his Crown Grant has matured. That Mr Bremner lay off a road to Mr Stewart's property on the Opaki, and also give an estimate of the expense of forming a road though the Piraii swamp. That Mr J. McKenzie be-informed that if he does not metal the approaches to the bridges leading through his property at Woodlands the Board will take legal proceedings against him, That John Howe's tender at £35 for the cuttings at Ahiaruhe be accepted, provided he furnishes the Engineer with satisfactory security for the due completion of the work,

That Blinkhorn and Co.'s tendor at £45 for cuttings at Kaumingi be accept ted. That the West County Council be applied to for payment of £22, amount deducted by Government from Board's subsidies. That the Clerk write to Mr, Wardell and ascertain if the Board are now at liberty to remove the fence erectedJy the natives at Gladstone.
