OUR SPORTING CONTRIBUTOR'S TIPS FOR THE COMING RACES.
The time has now arrived when I must endeavor to give your sporting readers the benefit of my experience in order that they may be enabled to lay out their money judiciously on the coming events. To take the races seriatim, I • will commence with the Maiden Plate. F-;r this I can see nothing but Romeo, as lie is undoubtedly the best in the race; failing him Repudiate should show well, For the Ladies' Purse it is doubtful what will start, as owners who are satisfied with their weights for the Stakes are bound to keep their horses for that eyent. Diver is pretty certain to be an absentee, or I should go straight for him and nothing else. In his absence I shall look for the winner in Lady Grey, though Harkaway will not be far off at the finish. The Opaki Stakes is the event of .the first clay. After carefully perusing the weights I have come to the conclusion that there is nothing in it can show his tail to Diver, and I expect to see him sustain his reputation as the best horse in the Wairarapa. If anything can come near him it will be Ada, as she is getting a good concession from the old horse. Going into the second day's racing, for the Hurdles I should pick Ada at the weights. I saw old Kangaroo out yesterday, but he does not look fit enough, and must have been taken in hand too late in the day. By the way, what has poor old Sloper done to merit the imposition of list 31b. That weight ought to qualify' him to act as whipper-in to the crowd. The Produce is the must open race of the meeting, as it is only open to unwed horses, and consequently is very difficult to spot, I have had an opportunity of seeing most of them do their galops, and out of the crowd I shall select Claret and Senorita, As you do 1101 publish to morrow and the weights for the District do not come out till tonight, lam unable to form any opinion on it; but if Diver gets anything like a show with the weights I shall expect to see him pull off the double event, Mr Macara is to he congratulated on 'his handicap, hs it seems to afford universal satisfaction. Should any of your readers, by following my tips, pull off a century or two, and feel inclined to show their gratitude to me for my information, they can have my address on application at your office. Meekin.
