CARTERTON
(PROM OUIt OWN COIIRESI'ONDENT.) Nov 14,1879. Tee land on which the building to be used, I understand, as a millinery establishment, is being erected to the north of Mr Hooker's chemist shop, has a frontage of24ft to the main road by a depth of 148 ft, and has been purchased at the rate of LlO per foot on the road measurement. From this it would seem that land, at any rate, in the centre of the township, is not depreciating in value. Some other allotments to the north of the Bank of New Zealand, nearly -ipposite Mr Booth's residence, have also laioly changed hands at the rate of L 5 per foot fromage.
The rain that has fallen during the last % hours has been a great boon to the settlers and small fanners, as everything was gelling very much parehed, If, however, it eoiitinuos for the next few days, it will make the Pastoral Show ground ml her uncomfortable for walking about in, as the grass is somewhat high. Referring to the latter exhibition, I may state that the local court of Foresters here have placed their hall at the disposal of the committee as a small room for the Stewards and visitors, A more convenient place for the purpose, both from the accommodation it affords, and its close proximity to the ground of the Society could not well be found.
The meeting of the County Council on Thursday was the shortest that has ever been held since the election of the present Councillors just twelve months ago, as they had got through all their business, which was mainly relating to public works, by 3.30 in the afternoon, As I write, the Pastoral Society Committee are holding their last meeting prior to the Show on the 19th inst., Wednesday next.
