ANNUAL REPORT OF THE MASTERTON WESLEYAN SUNDAY SCHOOL.
Presented at the Anniversary Meetinq, held November 10, 1879, by J?.' M. Gal'lowav, Secretary, Mb Chairman and BbethreNj-Mv report will necessarily be brief, as I have to deal principally with figures and work done. I find the total number of the children on the books of the school to be 113 and the number of teachers to be 14 .including the Superintendent, DeputyI Superintendent, Canvasser, Treasurer and Secretary, who is also Librarian. The average attendance of the children at the morning school for the year lias been 35 and for the afternoon, 65. The average attendance of teachers in the morning ; lias been 7, and in the afternoon 11° : These averages may appear small, but when we take into consideration the long winter we have just passed through and the amount of wet weather we have had you will understand how it is; for although we have had an attendance of 90 scholars at one time, yet the few who could sometimes attend in the winter months, brings the average attendance for the whole year down considerably. Although there was only one whole day (that was 20th July) on which there was no attendance marked, yet there were several mornings on which there was no school, Thero is also a Young Men's Class, which meets here in the church during school hours in the afternoon. It is with satisfaction I have to report a marked improvement in the school generally, both in the conduct and attention paid by the scholars in the several classes and Hii the appointments of the school, ihe children are comfortably seated on forms made suitable, with low seats and backs. We have a Library connected with the school, which is accessible to all the scholars who can read. The books are changed fortnightly, but as the Library has been added but very little to since it was first formed, we require some new books, and to raise funds for this purpose we now make a collection once a month among the teachers and scholars. This is d'.neon the first Sunday in the month. Un this day we also distribute periodicals to the children. Our supply is somewhat 1 ted ut present, hut we hope to have a full supply from the beginning of the year, as we have ordered sufficient from fiiigland through the Wellington branch of the Sunday School Union. We have also established a Band of Hope in connection with the bclio.il ca led the Masterton Wesleyan Sunday bchcM.l Band of Hope. The Band was established on the 18th August. The number now on the books is 30. We are now trying to raise funds to buy an American organ for the use rj£g§.' ■' Hitherto, the school has been manfHp by the officers and teachers, who have held a meetinq monthly, with the minister as chairman. The year we are just entering upon, we come under the rules of Conference for the first time, in havins a mixed Committee of management, the number being eleven, made up as follows: -lour from teachers' meeting,, two from from among the members of the Church and two from the congregation. The names for the ensuing year are as follows ■ -Messrs W Duncan, Jones, Hoar, Boult' J. Brown,, Vile, Baumber and Marshall with the Superintendent, Secretary and Treasurer of the school. teaser!;!!? 1 Smll nUmber of
By coming occasionally to the- acimol i> would encourage both fie teachers and the scholars; and as I lie sc'iolars a-e supplied with printed lists of lessons for the ycav, they might help them at home with their lessi ns, .; I can scarely close this report without Siting how much we are indebted to the ladies who have met for somo time past hi the school room on Thursday afternoon at sowing meetin s to raise funds for the school, the siecitl object being the purchase of ihe ovgan. The amount in hand from sewing meetings is £lB 18s 9d.
