LOWER WHAREAMA.

[from our own correspondent]. Oct. 25. Within the last week shearing operations have made fair progress in the district. At Langdale the wether flock lias been shorn, the shearers from there going to lea, where they are now at work, A wool classer, Mr Sutcliffe, late of Goldsborough's, wool brokers, Melbourne, is being employed on these two stations to class the clips. At Blairlogie, one of Mr Morrison's stations, work has also commenced, The wool this season is in better condition generally than last year, being better grown and much cleaner. Dipping, however, has a very bad effect on some clips. On dit that Messrs Elder & Co., are importing some first class sheep from Australia, for use on their station here. Good sheep are much required in this district, many flocks at present being of a very mongrel and inferior class, Considering the amount spent by flock owners here for rams (procured from outside the district) it would surely pay some enterprising person with capital to start ram breeding in the neighborhood. Mr Walter McKenzie is unablo to travel his horse, Sir William Wallace, in this district, through some misunderstanding with one of the stationholders, here, re accommodation. This will be a loss to the district, for I believe his stock is held in good repute here. In your issue of the 23rd inst., I notice a letter signed " IL„" complaining about the bad hotel accomodation here. Doubtless there is some cause for complaint, If I,L, would look below the surface a little he would soon arrive at the cause of what he complains of. Putting the drunkenness out of the question, I cannot see that our Licensing Commissioners and Policeman are to blame in the matter. The great and almost sole causo of there not being better accommodation-houses erected are this, is the" disgraceful road" our friend bemoans. If this gentleman had difficulty in travelling on horseback now, Burely he may, if he will give it a thought, arrive at the conclusion that it must have been almost impossible to get timber some months ago, when roads were much worse i than when your correspondent honored the neighborhood with a visit. The Rev Mr Gossett is making a tour.of 1 the district, and intends holding divine . service at Uriti on Thursday, 30th. There having been no clergyman to visit that ! portion of the district regularly, no doubt [ Mr Gossett will get a good congregation , to hear him.

The Tenui-Whaveama Fishing Club held a meeting last Saturday. There was no business of any great moment transacted, Now the fine season has set in and the Whareama River is clear again, it is tu be hoped the gentlemen forming the Club will soon renew the pleasant and profitable excursions of last summer,

A season or two ago a cricket club existed at Tenui, but from lack of sufficient energy on the part of the members it collapsed. Surely it might bo started again and would afford amusement to a number of people, several of whom only want practice to become adepts in this truly English game. The cemetery question remains in statu quo at present, Mr Bennett (from whom it is proposed to acquire the necessary land) preferring not to decide the matter until consultation with his partner, Mr Elder, who just now is absent in Australia. Oct. 30th. A smart shock of earthquake was felt here this morning between 2 and 3 o'clock.
