The Wairarapa Daily. THURSDAY, OCTOBER 16, 1879.
We are sorry to notice that Masterton is behind the other townships of the Wairarapa in the matter of gold prospecting. Its chance of making a discovery which will gke an impetus to its trade and growth is as good as thai of any other centre of population in the district. Precious metals have been proved to exist in the ranges in it;vicinity, and it is quite time that indi cations already made of mineral wealth should he further tested. During tin present period of depression it is doubtless ditlicult to float a strong prospecting company, but having in view the fact that the constitution of such a company would be the best means which can lie adopted to terminate tin contmcrciul inactivity which now unfortunately prevails, the settlers of Masterton would be justified in spend ing a little money in organizing a systematic search" for the gold that lies waiting for the enterprising prospector. The best season of the year for working in the ranges is now coming on, and we hope that advantage will be taken of it to send prospecting parties up them. It is desirable that the alluvial deposits which Mr Allen asserted to exist on the terraces at the head of the iiuamahanga should be further tested. Mi Allen reported that payable gold was there, but that at the time of his visit the wet weather prevented him from bottoming. There ought to he no difficulty in November and December in thoroughly testing the value of these terraces. It is equally desirable that the quartz reef visited by Mr Donald Donald last autumn, which proved, on f pecimens of it I ieing sent to the Govern raeut LaboM'or, 11 b) aurifmm, should be subjected to further analysis. We trust these necessary undertakings will shortly receive the attention of the leading settlers of the Borough, and that a strong company will be formed to carry them out,
